Thurman, praised by DownBeat for creating the effect of “imagine if Sarah Vaughan played saxophone like Dexter Gordon,” has also been described by Wynton Marsalis as “a great saxophonist and vocalist; a force of nature.” A New York City native, Thurman made history as the first woman to perform and tour full-time in the tenor saxophone chair with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. As a bandleader and international performer, she has appeared on prestigious stages including Jazz at Lincoln Center, SFJAZZ, the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, and the Obama Presidential Center, and has released five recordings as a leader.
Brown is an accomplished pianist, educator, and bandleader who has performed with such jazz luminaries as Kenny Garrett and Stefon Harris. Together, Thurman and Brown will explore beloved jazz classics, original compositions, and a few additional surprises. This rare duo collaboration promises a captivating evening of jazz at its most expressive, inventive, and intimate.
