CULTURE NEWS

  • Eugene artist Ernesto Javier Martinez, a writer, educator and filmmaker with work on Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Sesame Street, received a $150,000 grant from Oregon Community Foundation on Jan. 14 to develop an animated TV pilot about migrant and queer Latinx youth.  KLCC
  • The Maude Kerns Art Center is showcasing 'Escape to the Forest,' a season opener curated by Liberty Rossel that features four Northwest artists blending natural textures and colors into a living exhibition (the display is on view until Feb. 6).  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Research from the University of Oregon shows brief 10-minute sessions of linear number board games improve counting, number recognition, and quantity skills in young children. The HEDCO Institute review indicates educators and parents can use these low-cost games (e.g., The Great Race) to boost numeracy.  KVAL
  • Springfield School district approved layoffs for 27 employees and will eliminate vacant positions due to a mid-year budget gap. The cuts approved Monday will affect school schedules and building assignments, and more changes may follow (amid declining enrollment and rising costs).  KLCC
  • The Eugene Science Center will expand with an outdoor science park featuring six hands-on exhibits, benches, and shade structures to double its exhibit space. The project has reached 72% of its funding goal and will get a $50,000 match if the $90,000 target is met.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane County is asking residents to complete a survey on battery fire safety after a rise in lithium battery fires, with responses due by Jan. 19. The survey aims to improve recycling practices and support local nonprofit (BRING).  KEZI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ideal Option’s peer navigation program has deployed two experienced navigators in downtown to help people dealing with addiction, homelessness and mental illness by connecting them with key services; they have reached 25 people by today and 15 have accepted the assistance.  NBC 16
  • Amid below freezing temperatures, the Oregon State Fire Marshal offers home heating tips such as keeping flammable items three feet from heating equipment and plugging heaters directly into wall outlets (avoiding extension cords). The state recorded 10 home fires since January 1, highlighting the need to test smoke alarms monthly.  NBC 16
  • Health officials report that only 26 percent of adults have been vaccinated amid a drop from the usual 40-50 percent rate, raising concern about a severe flu season in Lane County (Dr. Khan urged residents to seek vaccination soon).  KEZI
  • Ideal Option’s peer navigation program is guiding residents downtown who face homelessness, addiction and mental health challenges—peer navigators use their experiences to connect individuals with housing, health care and other essential services. The program reportedly contacted 25 people, with 15 now enrolled in the services.  KVAL

  • Dante Moore, Oregon quarterback, announced he will return for another season instead of entering the NFL draft, keeping his spot with the Ducks. His decision was reported by ESPN and comes as the team builds its roster for next season + aims to sharpen its play.  KLCC
