COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Egan Warming Centers opened Friday, Jan. 23 in response to the cold spell and remain open today through Monday to provide warmth for residents — officials are urgently seeking volunteers to help meet demand.  NBC 16

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Thursday, Jan. 22 at 9:00 a.m., Eugene Water and Electric Board recorded a winter peak of 453 megawatts as 20-degree temperatures drove high energy use (natural gas heaters worked overtime). Wholesale prices remain low, but utilities warn that extended cold snaps could raise regional demand.  KVAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • 4J middle school is proposing to reduce class periods from seven to six to narrow a $30 million budget gap — a change that may limit arts electives for language immersion and special education students. The board will vote on Feb. 4 and decide if the shift should continue.  NBC 16
  • Eugene 4J middle school plans a schedule change that will cut an arts elective for language immersion and special education classes (a step to save $4 million as part of a $30 million budget gap), with a board vote scheduled for February 4.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Army Corps of Engineers is updating its 40-year-old roadmap for local lakes and seeks community feedback on future land use. Two public meetings are set for today - one at Veneta Community Center from 9 - 11 a.m. and one at Lowell High School from 2 - 4 p.m.  KLCC

HEALTH NEWS

  • The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for Western Oregon until Saturday afternoon to warn residents about the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Residents should dress warmly & ensure pets have a dry shelter when spending time outdoors.  KVAL
