- ➤ Late senator Wayne Morse is honored in Eugene at the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza (dedicated in 2005) for his lifelong defense of free speech and resistance to the Vietnam War. The memorial stands as a lasting reminder of civic values in our community. NBC 16
- ➤ St. Vincent de Paul Society extended its winter Egan Warming Centers activation to 12 straight nights, sheltering over 1,100 people with new sites at The Zone on Highway 99 and a Mohawk site in Springfield (services will continue until at least the end of March). NBC 16

- ➤ City Club of Eugene hosted a discussion with Talicia Brown, founder of the Black Cultural Initiative, to examine Eugene's history of Black exclusion and plans for a monument honoring displaced families. The talk aired on Monday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. on KLCC 89.7 FM (livestreamed online). KLCC

- ➤ Gas prices in Eugene jumped 16.9 cents last week to an average of $3.35 today (based on GasBuddy’s survey of 78 stations), showing a rise of 30.4 cents from last month but a drop of 17.7 cents from a year ago. KVAL
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ University of Oregon research shows that ancient tree stumps in Mount Hood and Willamette National Forests display burn scars from several low-severity wildfires (according to Assistant Research Professor James Johnston), challenging old ideas that mature forests never experienced small fires. - ➤ Autzen canoe canal footbridge will close Feb. 16 for a month as UO athletics facility upgrades begin; detour options include soft-surface paths near the BMX park (or Cuthbert Amphitheatre footbridges) while nearby Lot 8 remains closed through August. KEZI
