COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Vincent de Paul Society is adapting its Egan Warming Centers to meet winter challenges amid a 50 percent funding cut. The program served over 1,100 people at two sites on Highway 99 and in Springfield, plus added modular shelters and a mobile food kitchen that will operate through March.  KEZI
  • Queen Lily, a 14-year-old cat, and her playful 7-year-old sidekick Princess Peanut are up for adoption during Greenhill Humane Society’s Love Finds a Home promotion running through Feb. 14 at 88530 Green Hill Rd (call 541-689-1503 for more details).  KEZI

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A residential high-rise on Patterson Street caught fire Tuesday morning, Feb. 10, prompting Eugene Springfield Fire to control the blaze and search the affected apartment — no victims were found but water damage displaced several residents.  KEZI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two students at Churchill High School were hospitalized after a campus emergency on Monday, and police are investigating the cause while school officials confirmed that each student is receiving care.  KEZI
  • Springfield Public Schools let Board Chair Jonathan Light start talks for Superintendent Todd Hamilton’s resignation — Hamilton stays in his role as discussions continue after his seven-year leadership through the pandemic. The board voted on this during a Monday meeting.  KVAL
  • Springfield Public Schools elected Jonathan Light as board chair in a 3-1 vote Monday night after former chair Heather Kwasunsa resigned amid safety concerns + Light plans to begin a search for a new board member while board member Nicole De Graff cited concerns over past misconduct.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eugene City Council presented a 410 report from an independent advisory group on Monday that aims to avert a $11.5-million deficit by boosting economic development, creating 14,000 jobs, and raising $25 million in tax revenue over 10 years while advising improved efficiency and new revenue options for manager Jenny Haruyama.  NBC 16

HEALTH NEWS

  • Greenhill Humane Society and Lane County Animal Services rescued 21 cats from a Marcola property after their owner died. The cats were taken on Friday, Feb. 6 and are getting urgent treatment for malnutrition, infections, and parasites.  KVAL
  • New research shows that children given smartphones before age 13 face higher risks for poor sleep and obesity, and Eugene Pediatric Associates advises parents to set limits and model healthy screen habits. This guidance helps protect children’s brain development as digital use increases.  NBC 16
