COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LCOG held its Annual Member Appreciation Dinner and fundraiser on Friday, March 6 at Cottage Grove Armory where over 160 community leaders and officials gathered, raising more than $14,000 to fund 1,400 senior meals (and honoring local public service achievements).  NBC 16
  • Project Sanitation Justice is mapping public restrooms in Eugene to improve access to safe, clean facilities. Led by Sarah Koski and local partners (City of Eugene and the University of Oregon), the project invites volunteers to help update an open database.  KLCC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Oregon drivers now pay about $4.48 per gallon for regular gasoline versus a national average of $3.71—global events and local policies are driving the increase. Experts say high state taxes and environmental rules add to the cost difference for local motorists.  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lane Community College Education Association warned today that up to 22 full-time instructor positions and two programs might be cut amid proposed program changes at the college.  KVAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hanwha Renewables said it plans to submit an application for the Muddy Creek solar park before the May 19 deadline, prompting neighbors near Harrisburg to worry the project could harm farmland and wetlands — they fear a negative impact on local ecosystems.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon drivers must remove studded tires by April 1 to avoid a $165 citation because state law permits their use only until March 31. Vehicle owners are urged to switch to alternative traction devices or delay travel if extra grip is needed.  NBC 16
  • Oregon lawmakers approved a bill requiring schools to keep AED devices working and accessible and to train coaches on their use, pending Gov. Kotek’s signature; the rule will go into effect in summer 2027. (The measure passed with little opposition in both legislative chambers.)  KLCC
  • The Eugene Police Department is hosting a police hiring workshop on Saturday, March 21 at 11 a.m. at its headquarters to help community members learn about the hiring process and get tips from experienced officers.  KVAL

  • UO track and field finished runner-up in both men’s and women’s events at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 16 + Peyton Bair broke a school record in the heptathlon while Wilma Nielsen and Aaliyah McCormick won the mile and 60-meter hurdles.  KLCC
