COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eugene Family YMCA is planning to expand with a new North campus and an enhanced Patterson Street facility for tennis and pickleball as it gathers community input through a survey that has drawn over 2,000 responses. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 3:30 p.m. Monday, fire crews contained a brush fire in the 24000 block of Hall Road in Lane County, where flames only reached 1 to 2 feet in height and the scene is now managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry as conditions dry.  NBC 16
  • Deschutes County Search and Rescue rescued two climbers stranded nearly 400 feet above the ground at Smith Rock State Park on Tuesday, Mar. 24 at 1 a.m. after their ropes jammed during a nighttime descent, and neither sustained injuries.  KVAL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by the Common Sense Institute shows rising housing and childcare costs and slower wage growth are straining locals in Eugene. Experts warn that extra expenses from gas prices and changes to SNAP (a government assistance program) add further pressure.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eugene 4J School District moved its public budget meeting from late March to April 8 after school leaders discovered a potential shortfall of up to $50 million; details will be discussed at an additional meeting on April 22.  KLCC

  • The Environmental Working Group released its annual Dirty Dozen report (75% of non-organic produce contained residues), and Eugene organic grocers report growing consumer interest as they team with local organic farms for fresher options.  KEZI
  • Firefighters contained a brush fire on Monday, Mar. 24 on the 24000 block of Hall Road in Lane County before flames spread; the Oregon Department of Forestry took over management and officials advised residents to exercise caution as outdoor conditions dry.  KVAL

  • A power outage affected 1,500 customers in Pleasant Hill, Creswell and Eugene on Tuesday, Mar. 24. Crews worked to restore service while EPUD investigated the cause and promised further updates as more details became available.  NBC 16
