COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A youth delegation from Eugene’s Sister City of Kakegawa, Japan arrives on March 27 for a four-day visit. Mayor Kaarin Knudson will welcome seven high school students and two chaperones at City Hall and guide them on a tour of the city—continuing a long-standing cultural exchange program.  City of Eugene
  • White Bird Clinic announced that its CAHOOTS Mobile Crisis Response in Eugene will operate one day per week starting April 7 — interim executive director Amée Markwardt said the clinic is searching for new funding to restore these services while CAHOOTS in Springfield will continue to run seven days per week from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  KVAL
  • Friends of Eugene Public Library will hold a two-day book sale on April 12 and April 13 at the Lane Events Center Performance Hall to support library programs—offering a wide range of books, DVDs, and more at bargain prices. The sale runs from 9 a.m.—4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.—4 p.m. on Sunday.  City of Eugene

CULTURE NEWS

  • Simon Longnight returned to Eugene on Tuesday at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts to open Hamilton. He plays Lafayette (and Thomas Jefferson) and said he is thankful for the community that helped him grow as an actor since his time at South Eugene High School.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Oregon faculty union members, numbering over 1,500, stated that classes would be disrupted if no contract deal is reached by March 31, as they have not seen wage increases despite growing university revenues. The union said concerns over low pay compared to rising living costs and successful athletics revenue could result in canceled courses + confusion at the start of the spring term.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On March 25, the Oregon House passed Alyssa's Law, which requires school districts to consider installing panic alarms to connect staff with emergency services. The law, named in honor of Alyssa Alhadeff (a victim of the 2017 Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting), now moves to the Senate with funding available through the School Safety and Emergency Management program.  NBC 16
  • Just over 200 candidates filed last week for more than 70 open offices in Lane County’s May election—voters will choose representatives for school, fire, and water districts. Some races are uncontested while others, including contests for Eugene 4J School Board seats and the Row River Fire District Board, will have multiple candidates, and voters must register by April 29.  KLCC
  • A petition to let Eugene voters decide on a fee for fire and city services qualified to appear on the November ballot. Voters Against Forever Fees gathered over 8,400 valid signatures in about two weeks—backed by the Eugene Chamber of Commerce, which called the fee unsustainable.  KLCC
