ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lane County deputies and fire personnel responded at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, March 31, to a single vehicle crash on Territorial Road near Doane Road south of Crow when a 2005 Chevy Malibu left the road—struck a tree—and killed its only occupant while police investigated the cause.  KVAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Eugene police are seeking community help to identify a suspect after vandals broke into Wesley United Methodist Church Monday night, causing thousands in damage to music equipment and religious items. Surveillance video captured a person leaving the church at 5:30 a.m. April 1 — and recovered belongings were found near St Andrews Drive.  KVAL
  • Counterfeit money was reportedly passed at west Eugene businesses including a McDonald’s and a convenience store, and Eugene police are investigating after a Bethel Neighborhood Watch post described fake $10 bills used in purchases.  KEZI
  • At 12:40 p.m. on Friday, March 28, a deputy responded near Florence to a report of a burning sock in a vehicle gas tank cap and after linking the evidence to the scene, police arrested 33 year old Elizabeth Louise Jeffery from Texas for first degree arson.  KVAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Education terminated several key student learning projects after the U.S. Department of Education cut more than $2.5M in funding on March 28—ten months earlier than planned. The department has begun notifying educators and will evaluate the impact as it continues to support Oregon students.  NBC 16

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local land trusts protecting nearly 20,000 acres along the McKenzie and Willamette rivers — including Greenbelt Land Trust in Corvallis and McKenzie River Trust in Eugene — are urging residents to volunteer and donate as federal funding remains uncertain. The trusts said their projects focus on restoring farmlands, forests and streams — vital work during Earth Month that began April 1 — and will rely on support at Market of Choice events.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City began a critical project in early March to retrofit the Chambers Street Bridge so emergency services can reach the River Road and Santa Clara neighborhoods in a major earthquake. Drivers on Chambers and Roosevelt should expect single-lane closures and detours — they are advised to use Garfield and W Second Avenue as the work will continue through the end of the year.  City of Eugene
  • The City of Eugene and Lane Transit District will launch a two-year pilot project in fall 2025 to modify Route 1 — increasing frequency to every 30 minutes and extending evening service — to cover a wider downtown area, including high-density housing and the new riverfront neighborhood. Officials will evaluate the route's performance when the pilot concludes in summer 2027.  City of Eugene
