COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kids FIRST of Lane County planted blue pinwheels during Child Abuse Prevention Month to raise awareness and support fundraisers & a $1 million campaign for expanded services after helping over 800 children last year. The nonprofit works with law enforcement and child welfare partners.  KEZI
  • Willamalane Park and Recreation District planted 11 trees in Springfield parks to honor employees who served 20 years or more and to help rebuild the tree canopy lost in the 2024 ice storm. Staff picked their trees & chose planting spots as the district continues hiring for summer and full-time roles.  KEZI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Paul Biondi, a local saxophonist who played with legends like Aretha Franklin, now performs at his local church — he credits his community’s support during his cancer battle — sharing his passion for music in Eugene.  KVAL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Oregon Employment Department reported 2,000 new jobs in January with the unemployment rate falling to 5.2% after a challenging 2025. Gains came mainly from leisure and hospitality and health care, while manufacturing and business services lost jobs.  KLCC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new workforce development program has been launched at Shift Community Cycles to teach residents in shelters how to become bicycle mechanics in Eugene — funded by the Chamber of Commerce. Eight participants are halfway through training and will work at summer bike repair pop-ups and connect with local shops.  KLCC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Eugene Springfield Fire advises homeowners to clear leaves and needles from roofs and gutters (to reduce wildfire risks) and prepare a 72-hour go-bag and evacuation plan. The fire department recommends creating a defensible space as temperatures warm and wildfire risks grow.  KVAL
