COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gillis Williams, an Eugene resident and former Washington State University student, launched his Autism Chose Me business through TikTok to raise autism awareness and sell merchandise—he will tour Eastern Oregon next week to speak at schools about embracing neurodiversity.  NBC 16
  • The City of Eugene will host a series of bike events from May through September to promote active transportation and sustainability. The lineup includes Bike Month Kickoff at Oakshire Brewing on May 1, free breakfasts with bike safety checks at Breakfast at the Bike Bridges, an eRide Expo on June 14, and the EUGENE BRiGHT Parade on September 27 — giving residents many ways to ride, learn, and enjoy outdoor fun.  City of Eugene
  • Greenhill Humane Society will host a Cattery Open House on Sunday, April 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to attract volunteers and foster families as it sees an increase in mama cats, pregnant cats and kittens—attendees will tour the cat care area and learn about volunteer and foster opportunities.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During the April 1 meeting, the Eugene Water and Electric Board approved its 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Plan to add satellite and artificial intelligence tools for better vegetation management—and to boost electric system resiliency with new equipment and fire risk modeling. The plan will support grant projects to rebuild parts of the grid and advise customers in high-risk areas to prepare for possible power shutoffs during extreme fire weather.  KVAL
  • City crews and developers are installing new green stormwater facilities—rain gardens, stormwater planters, and bioswales—to slow runoff and filter pollutants before water reaches local waterways. The system now covers more than 13½ acres and undergoes yearly sediment removal to prevent harmful chemicals from entering the Willamette River and Amazon Creek.  City of Eugene

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Dan Rayfield and State House Speaker Julie Fahey will host a joint town hall today in Eugene from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.—Oregonians can share concerns about federal budget cuts and job layoffs affecting local families. A panel of speakers from food assistance and public health sectors will add insight as additional town halls are planned for April 9 in Portland and May 3 in Bend.  NBC 16
  • Postal workers in Eugene protested on Tuesday outside the downtown post office—arguing that potential USPS privatization would lead to lower service, higher costs, and job cuts that could affect rural residents.  NBC 16
  • Attorney General Dan Rayfield announced a multistate settlement with Mylan Inc. (now part of Viatris) to settle claims over deceptive opioid marketing, with Mylan agreeing to pay up to $335 million over nine years. Oregon will get over $4 million for treatment, recovery and prevention services (set by the state board).  NBC 16
