Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CAHOOTS union members and former employees are working on a new plan to keep their emergency services running in Eugene after the city ended its contract Monday because of budget cuts— they held a town hall at the University of Oregon on April 10th to gather community feedback and are seeking additional funding while services remain available daily in Springfield from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  KVAL
  • Blue River is still recovering from the Holiday Farm Fire as residents celebrated progress at a block party on April 5—rebuilding efforts include a new O’Brien Memorial Library that honors Frances O’Brien with improved facilities and a monthly speaker series. CRIME NEWS

  • A Eugene man was sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty to posting videos between September 24 and 27, 2024, in which he threatened violence and said he would be the next notorious school shooter — a concerned citizen’s 9-1-1 call led police to arrest him on September 27.  NBC 16

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a town hall meeting at the University of Oregon on April 11, community members and former CAHOOTS staff urged city officials to secure funding so the program can resume full-time service in Eugene after its recent elimination. Panelists stated that matching the reimbursement rate provided in Springfield—currently covering 100% of costs instead of Eugene's 40%—could enable CAHOOTS to operate 24/7 as public support remains strong.  KLCC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Vacancy rates in the Portland metro dropped since spring 2024, and a report by Multifamily Northwest (MFNW) shows that Eugene/Springfield has a very low vacancy rate of 3.56%. Experts say rents will likely rise soon as higher construction costs and slow wage growth continue to affect new development.  NBC 16
