ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The Eugene Police Department responded to a head-on crash at Barger Road and Primrose Street near Shasta Middle School when a 35-year-old Audi driver—who may have suffered a medical issue—almost hit a crosswalk guard and school children before colliding with a Ford F-150 driven by a 61-year-old man, and two children plus one man were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Eugene gas prices dropped by 4.3 cents over the past week to an average of $3.86 per gallon — the cheapest station charged $3.53 and the most expensive $4.29 — as national gasoline prices also fell by 8.2 cents to $3.13 per gallon. NBC 16
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Oregon State Fire Marshal announced the recipients of the Wildfire Season Staffing Grant, which gives local fire agencies up to $35,000 to hire extra firefighters for wildfire response during the season. The $6M investment will add more than 1,500 firefighters statewide (supporting 50% of rapid response staffing in some districts) to improve emergency readiness. NBC 16
- ➤ Today, the City Council faces an $11.5 million deficit and voters will decide the fire fee (in November or a special election in August), a step that may force cuts to the Eugene Public Library’s services next year. Linda Ague of the Friends of the Library said the downtown branch (already facing a $2 million reduction in previous budgets) may cut hours and furlough staff if the deficit is not resolved. KLCC
- ➤ A federal food assistance program was canceled last month, reducing about 15% of the food inventory at Lane County pantries that support 12,000 households monthly—local officials say this cut comes as demand neared record levels in recent months. Eighteen state senators have written to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins urging the program be fully restored to help neighbors in need. KLCC
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Lane County reported a rise in a Shigella outbreak that made 15 people sick this year, with 10 cases linked to the outbreak in Portland, and most victims being unsheltered. Health officials and volunteers distributed hand sanitizers and wipes while urging agencies to add more public restrooms (to help address the sanitation gap). NBC 16
- ➤ City Club of Eugene hosted a forum on early detection of cancer that focused on community resources and new research by the Oregon Cancer Foundation and the Center for Biomedical Data Science—speakers explained how early detection strategies and machine learning can assist treatment.
