Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 1 at 8:30 p.m., Lane County Sheriff’s deputies and Mohawk Valley Rural Fire District responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Marcola and Hill roads after a 2007 Toyota Highlander failed to stop at a stop sign; the driver, Gabriel Michael Drummond of Eugene, fled the scene and was later arrested on charges including DUI, reckless driving, assault in the 3rd degree, and hit and run while one adult and four child passengers from another vehicle, with one child seriously injured, were taken to an area hospital.  KVAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new exhibit called Hostile Terrain 94 is on view at the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History. The exhibit—created by professors and students—commemorates those who died crossing the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and is open until May 9.  KVAL
  • This week, Maude Kerns Art Center is hosting three events—a 2nd Annual Studio Tour on April 26 in Whiteaker featuring six studios with 31 local artists, an ongoing Airport Gallery exhibition 'Oregon: Rain or Shine' displaying Karen Russo’s sculpture 'Heron Rising,' and the 'Beyond the Print' show on East 15th highlighting climate change through printmaking. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oregon lawmakers passed HB 2251 on Tuesday by a 36-21 vote—mandating school districts to ban student cellphones during school hours, and the bill now heads to the Senate for further review.  KLCC
  • The Eugene 4J School District approved a three-year contract with new superintendent Miriam Mickelson—she will begin July 1 with a base salary of $300,000, vehicle and technology stipends, and up to $10,000 for moving expenses. The contract also lets the district reduce her pay if spending cuts are needed amid declining enrollment and rising costs as the board works on next year's budget.  KLCC
  • University of Oregon faculty senate is weighing joining a compact to protect academic freedoms amid political actions against universities as part of a broader discussion among Big Ten schools—Rutgers passed a resolution on April 6 to create a Mutual Academic Defense Compact that would offer shared legal and legislative support—faculty say this effort would help form a unified voice against such attacks.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane County public safety agencies held a mass casualty drill at University of Oregon’s Matthew Knight Arena from April 7th to 10th to practice handling an active threat in a crowded venue—teams such as Springfield Police, University of Oregon Police, and Eugene Springfield Fire used volunteer actors to mimic real injuries. A $60,000 federal grant paid for the exercise while area hospitals and emergency teams from local cities also contributed.  KVAL
  • The Eugene Police Department received an FAA waiver that allowed its 13 trained drone pilots to fly beyond visual line of sight at altitudes up to 200 feet from the station. Police Sergeant Kyle Williams said the new rule helps them respond faster and that a North Eugene site will be added—while the program is funded by the Community Safety Payroll Tax amidst ongoing privacy concerns.  KLCC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lane County health officials on April 17th reported 18 cases of Shigella this year, which exceeds last year’s 12 cases and signals a rise in a bacteria that spreads through contaminated food and water. Eugene service providers are working to help local homeless people by handing out wipes and sanitizer and urging more public handwashing stations (many homeless lack access to soap and water).  KLCC
