COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today marks the one-year anniversary of Sharon Schuman's death after she was struck while running on the Amazon path. Her family has organized a memorial gathering at 9 a.m. with a gentle run/walk at 9:30 to benefit Chamber Music Amici, SquareOne Community Villages and the Fanconi Cancer Foundation.  KLCC
  • A ceremony was held Wednesday, April 22, in Springfield at the intersection of Highway 126 and 52nd Street to honor fallen officer Chris Kilcullen, remembered for his compassion + dedication, on the 15th anniversary of his death. Highway 126 has been renamed in his honor.  KEZI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rose Children’s Theatre presents Something Rotten! JR., a musical comedy that fuses Shakespeare with Broadway style. The show will run on April 24 at 7:00 p.m. + additional nights at the theatre, so audiences should arrive early to secure seating.  NBC 16

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Twelve public service agencies hosted the second annual Equity and Community Consortium Job Fair at Farmer's Market Pavilion in downtown Eugene, where veterans had early access and free resume help was offered. Representatives say the event helped job seekers connect directly with recruiters across Eugene & Springfield.  KEZI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Springfield Public Schools launched its search for an interim superintendent for the 2026-27 school year and is asking community members to complete an anonymous survey (taking 5 to 10 minutes) available on its website. The board is working with a search firm to gather feedback on the qualities needed in the new leader.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • According to the annual report, Eugene’s Climate Action Plan 2.0 was 67% complete after six years — emissions declined 11% since 2010 despite 20,000 additional residents, and the report highlighted improvements in transportation, energy efficiency at affordable housing, and tree planting in underserved neighborhoods.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Eugene Water & Electric Board is accepting applications for the 2026 Electric Mobility Grant to fund electric transportation projects by nonprofits & academic institutions & public organizations within its service territory. Applications are available on EWEB's website and must be submitted by Friday, July 31.  KEZI

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The 88-year-old Steelhead Brewery building in west Eugene will be sold to an electrical contractor who plans to remove old brewing equipment and convert the 23,000 sqft facility into its new headquarters. The sale is pending at an asking price of $1.6 million.  Eugene Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a Jan. 25 traffic accident claimed the life of UO Ph.D. student Erick Munene Njue, friends will run on Sunday, April 26 at Hayward Field in Eugene Half Marathon to call for safer roads. Cleven Mmari and his son Nehemia will honor Njue to boost cyclist and pedestrian safety.  Eugene Weekly
