Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 25th of April.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bill Stoller, founder of Stoller Wine Group, died peacefully in his sleep on April 23. His work in sustainable viticulture and community building shaped the Oregon wine industry and will guide future efforts.  NBC 16
  • Bigfoot Beverages permanently replaced striking workers on Thursday after the strike passed 200 days—raising legal questions about the firm's actions in what some call an unfair labor practice strike. A University of Oregon labor professor said that replacing workers amid a dispute over pension changes may violate federal law while the union criticized the decision as a union busting tactic.  NBC 16

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating reports of sick and dead brown pelicans along the coast; initial tests from two pelicans in Newport are negative for HPAI—officials will run further tests to see if domoic acid or another illness is causing the deaths. The public is advised to leave the birds undisturbed and keep dogs leashed.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • University of Oregon President Karl Scholz joined 443 colleges on April 22 by signing a letter that rejects using public research money to force changes in higher education. The American Association of Colleges and Universities said the letter calls for oversight and constructive reform while preserving institutional autonomy.  KVAL
  • The Oregon Department of Emergency Management said FEMA canceled the fiscal year 2024 BRIC grant program — leaving many disaster preparedness projects at risk of delays and increased costs. Governor Kotek and OEM Director Erin McMahon said they are working with legislators to address the financial impacts on essential community projects.  KVAL
  • On April 24, a Maryland federal judge granted a temporary injunction that stopped the U.S. Department of Education from cutting federal funds or prosecuting Eugene School District 4J and other schools for teaching lessons on race and history.
