COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eugene mourns local leader Sharon Schuman, 79, who was hit and killed while jogging her usual path Wednesday morning—she built Chamber Music Amici and helped run many community programs, and police are still investigating the crash.  KVAL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Event organizers stated that local runner Mateo Cruz died after finishing the half marathon on April 27 in Eugene—his loss has left the running community deeply saddened.  NBC 16

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Eugene community mourned Sharon Schuman, a 79-year-old musician and leader who was struck and killed while jogging on her favorite trail yesterday. She founded Chamber Music Amici + supported legal fellowships and affordable housing, while police continue investigating the crash.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Kotek signed two bills Wednesday morning to secure stable funding for summer learning programs that focus on literacy for preschool through 12th grade students. House Bill 2007 creates a Summer Learning Grant Program Fund and requires reports on student outcomes — while House Bill 5047 will provide $35 million for the summers of 2026 and 2027 to support improved summer education.  KVAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State and federal regulators fined J.H. Baxter Company and owner Georgia Baxter-Krause $1.5 million for breaking air-pollution laws by releasing toxic wastewater fumes from its closed west Eugene wood-creosoting factory — the company used funds from selling valuable real estate to pay $1.1 million of the fine. Baxter-Krause was ordered to serve 90 days in federal prison as local agencies work on a cleanup estimated to cost $50 million to $100 million.  Eugene Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Eugene proposed a $1.3 billion budget for 2025–2027 that included $11.5 million in annual cuts due to record inflation and property tax caps, affecting Public Safety, Public Works and other departments. The cuts were unveiled on April 30 and will take effect in July while the Budget Committee holds public meetings on May 14, May 21 and May 28 before the budget is adopted on June 23.  KVAL
  • The Eugene city manager presented a proposed budget that cuts $11.5 million from the general fund and will reduce police services by cutting branches and the community engagement team—fire, EMS and library services will also lose funds as Amazon Pool and Sheldon Community Center close, affecting 75 lifeguard positions. The public will be able to voice concerns at meetings on May 14, May 21, and May 28 before the budget is adopted on June 23 and goes into effect on July 1.  NBC 16
  • The City of Eugene plans to add a protected bike lane along 24th Avenue between Amazon Path and Agate Street using widened lanes and low, modular curbs to keep bicycles separate from traffic while removing on-street parking from Hilyard to Agate to boost safety. A final community meeting is set for May 13 at Roosevelt Middle School's cafeteria—construction will begin in summer and residents can file appeals until May 30.  KEZI
