CRIME NEWS

  • Lane County deputies arrested 32-year-old Regis McDonald on March 20 after he allegedly drove from North Carolina to Eugene to stalk his ex-boyfriend, sent over 60 threatening texts with gun images, and attempted to break into a victim's home while in possession of a ghost gun.  KEZI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student workers at the University of Oregon in Eugene have continued their strike—disrupting a presentation on May 1 at the Ford Alumni Center to demand a starting wage of $17.50 and better benefits. Negotiations will continue with another mediation session set for May 5 as they press for improved pay and working conditions.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane County Sheriff Cliff Harrold is resigning mid-term to join PeaceHealth as a senior security leader; his resignation is effective May 16 — Chief Deputy Carl Wilkerson will cover his duties until a new sheriff is named.  KLCC
  • Eugene leaders received a proposal to cut $11.5 million from city services that will close the downtown library 2 days a week, end the Greenhill Humane Society contract, and shut down Amazon Pool and Sheldon Community Center this fall. City Manager Sarah Medary said the proposal will cut over 200 jobs and support programs—temporary and seasonal positions eliminated—and council members are worried about long-term service and public safety impacts.  KLCC
  • VA Secretary Doug Collins visited the Eugene VA facility on May1 to highlight its work in supporting veterans—especially those from rural areas—and to discuss the new Electronic Health Record Modernization system that links records across six VA centers. The VA will resume pre-deployment activities for the system at new sites later this year.  KVAL
  • Residents in Junction City are struggling to get REAL IDs before the May 7 deadline needed for air travel—one local reported that an office was closed on April 30 and that Eugene’s office faced even worse short staffing. Officials have not yet added more staff to handle the increasing demand.  KVAL
  • Lane County Sheriff Cliff Harrold (after 35 years of service) announced his retirement on May 1 and will retire on May 16. He plans to join PeaceHealth Oregon Network (as manager of Security and Public Safety) after stepping down from his role at the sheriff's office.  KVAL

  • Thursday, the Eugene Emeralds announced longtime staffer Matt Dompe is now the team’s general manager (he joined in 2010) and he will take charge with his first official game as GM scheduled for May 22 (his debut as GM).  KVAL
