COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Willamalane Park and Recreation District in Springfield is named a finalist for the 2026 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management & will learn if they win on Sept. 30 at the NRPA Annual Conference.  KEZI

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Eugene Gleemen will perform on Saturday, May 30 at 4:30 p.m. at the University of Oregon’s McArthur Court to celebrate their 100th anniversary, the venue’s century mark, and America 250 as part of a multi-anniversary concert (which also marks director Dr. John Jantzi’s retirement). Doors open at 3 p.m.  KEZI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Oregon drivers are paying an average of $5.30 a gallon after prices rose 19 cents this week, AAA reported. The increase comes amid rising crude oil costs and seasonal shifts that drive up pump prices.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lane Community College will host its Annual Job Fair on Thursday, May 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Center Building at the main campus – the free event offers on-site interviews and resume support for current students, alumni, and community members.  NBC 16

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local fire officials warn that wildfire risk will be high by July and August, urging residents to check weather and burn conditions plus prepare their properties. Fire chiefs remind the public to report any smoke or flames and follow burn rules to keep the risk low.  KEZI
  • Jet fuel costs have surged to around $4.50 a gallon—up 65% since February—and state forestry officials say current contracts secure needed aerial firefighting resources to protect communities across Oregon. The fuel spike may raise future aviation costs if high prices persist.  KVAL

  • Gov. Kotek and state agency leaders preview the wildfire season as dry conditions and record warmth (with nine counties under emergency declarations) raise concerns for fire growth; officials say coordinated multi-agency responses and public prevention efforts are planned for a longer, earlier season.  NBC 16
  • Senators Merkley and Wyden plus Congresswoman Hoyle urged PeaceHealth to pause its plan to replace local emergency physicians at three Oregon hospitals, including the only Level II trauma center at Riverbend in Springfield. They warned the change could impact patient care and operational efficiency.  NBC 16
  • Eugene leaders use National Bike Month to spotlight micromobility options and boost transit connections. Mayor Knudsen and officials announced a federal push to secure funding for Cascadia Bike Share — which expanded its fleet and expects over 300,000 rides this year.  KVAL
