CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On May 5, a man was arrested when deputies spotted him driving a stolen truck behind businesses on Green Acres Road in Eugene—authorities said he had stolen mail, a gun, methamphetamine, and forged checks and tried to drive off before being pinned by officers. KEZI
- ➤ Eugene Police arrested suspect Elisha Joe Young—37 in Ohio on May 6 after an investigation into the embezzlement that caused Eugene Weekly to cease its print edition in December 2023, and she was indicted on three counts of aggravated theft and two counts of theft before being set for extradition to Lane County. - ➤ Former Eugene Weekly business manager Elisha Young, 37, was arrested in Whitehall, Ohio, on May 6 and now faces felony charges after allegedly stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the paper—she will be extradited to Lane County to face three counts of aggravated theft and two counts of theft in the first degree. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Eugene will open a new Downtown Riverfront Plaza in July as part of a $60 million project to reconnect the city with the Willamette River — the plaza will host community gatherings, concerts, food carts and aid future retail developments while largely relying on a $5 million state grant. NBC 16
- ➤ The City of Eugene is proposing $11.5 million in annual budget cuts that will reduce funding for the police, animal services, and library hours — changes that will affect local services. - ➤ REAL ID enforcement began yesterday—travelers without compliant IDs faced extra screening at TSA checkpoints. The DMV reported over 225,000 REAL IDs were issued from 58 field offices, and Oregonians may use passports, military IDs or tribal IDs to fly without delay. KVAL
