  • As fire season nears, Greenhill Humane Society urges residents to store three days’ worth of pet food, medications, water, and supplies while keeping extra gas and checking its website for updates on emergency pet care (Lane Events Center is one option).  NBC 16
  • Over 200 residents at Lakewood Vista Mobile Home Park are working to buy their community after the park was put up for sale by out-of-state owners. Local groups and lawmakers are providing guidance and financial help as the residents organize their offer.  KLCC
  • Greenhill Humane Society advises pet owners to prepare for fire season by having three days of food, water, and medication ready (along with a pet carrier and a full gas tank) and recommends microchipping pets and contacting local help if you are away when fire threatens your animal; updated resource locations will be posted on their website.  KVAL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters controlled a large barn fire in the 91000 block of Marcola Road today; crews from surrounding agencies brought water tankers as no hydrants were nearby and damage is estimated at about half a million dollars.  KEZI

CULTURE NEWS

  • City Club of Eugene hosted a program on Monday, May 11 that explored how the arts help youth build confidence and connection. Leaders from Simply Youth Institute and #instaballet ended the session with audience Q&A on access, funding, and arts education + ways to support a healthier Eugene.  KLCC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Eugene have risen 14.4 cents in one week and now average $5.29/g on Monday at 78 stations, with prices ranging from $4.99 to $5.89.  NBC 16

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Caleb Johnson of Johnson Brothers Garden Market explained that the new Pink Princess Daphne produces larger, longer-lasting blooms and thrives in sun and wet soil — a tougher version of the classic variety. Local gardeners can plant it this spring to enjoy its fragrance next winter.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • About 2,500 McKenzie Valley electricity customers along the McKenzie River — east of Springfield — will receive new bills from Lane Electric Cooperative this month, a move designed to boost grid resilience by reducing outage frequency and cutting local response times.  KLCC
  • Eugene Police Department is honoring fallen officers (Chris Kilcullen, Oscar Duley, Jesse Jennings Jackson) during National Police Week, which runs May 10 through May 16 to recognize their sacrifice for the community.  KEZI
  • Deadwood Loop Road near the Deadwood Covered Bridge will close on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning May 18 until July 1 — crews will repaint the bridge and it will reopen in evenings and on weekends, with an alternate route via Deadwood Creek Road.  NBC 16

HEALTH NEWS

  • Oregon health and environmental agencies have begun seasonal testing of lakes and rivers for toxic cyanobacteria blooms as temperatures rise. Residents are advised to avoid water that appears foamy, scummy or green (a potential sign of toxins) which can make people and pets sick.  NBC 16
