COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A homeless shelter site in Eugene now has permanent water, electric and sewer service after a project with EWEB—port-a-potties have been replaced with running water, showers and flushed toilets—making the Nightingale Hosted Shelters site on 34th Alley and Hilyard Street safer and more livable.  KEZI
  • Greenhill Humane Society will host its 32nd annual Bark in the Park fundraiser Sunday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Alton Baker Park with over 1100 people, 700 dogs and more than 60 vendors expected to join 2k, 5k and 10k runs; funds raised will support food and medicine for the shelter amid forthcoming budget cuts that may affect animal welfare officer roles in the police department.  KEZI

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 5, Eugene police arrested Anthony Miro Latin, aged 39, and Christina Amber Schmisek, aged 41, after investigating illegal narcotics delivery from a local transitional housing camp—officers seized fentanyl, cash, a Glock handgun and evidence of identity theft from Latin's hotel room, residence and storage unit.  KVAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Oregon received a $25 million donation from alumnus Jordan Schnitzer and his foundation to expand its global studies program—funding new faculty hires, an international relations major, and graduate research. The university will also use the donation to launch a center for global futures and rename its global studies school.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Eugene voiced their concerns during recent city council meetings as the city plans to adopt a new budget on June 23 that will cut millions from essential services. More than 30 public comments defended the library and animal services amid uncertain funds from the Fire Service Fee—sparking debates on city spending.  KEZI
  • Rep. Darin Harbick has introduced a bill that would let people request corrections from news outlets up to 40 days instead of 20 days after a story is published—he cites his dispute with a paper over his son’s presence at Jan 6 as a reason for the change. News leaders worry the measure may slow the work of keeping the press honest.  KLCC
  • Eighteen western Oregon counties received over $27 million from Bureau of Land Management timber funds—Coos got $1.9 million, Douglas $6.9 million and Lane $4.1 million. Each county will decide how to use the funds for local projects.  KVAL

  • Sabrina Ionescu, a three-time WNBA All-Star for Liberty, returned to Eugene on May 13 with former Oregon standout Nyara Sabally for a preseason game at Matthew Knight Arena where she scored 25 points to help lead an 84-61 win over Japan’s Toyota Antelopes — she celebrated her college roots by rallying the sellout crowd with a resounding go ducks.  KLCC
