COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ University of Oregon students placed 20 signs along Patterson Street near off-campus housing to promote safe driving, while the Live-Move organization unveiled a street redesign (set for installation this summer) to improve safety. KEZI
- ➤ State-funded housing projects have finished building 324 homes lost in the 2020 wildfires, including in Lane County. The $114M effort rebuilt essential housing for survivors with help from local groups (like Homes for Good). KEZI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On May 28, the Eugene 4J school board approved its 2026-27 budget after several meetings addressed a multi-million-dollar deficit. The board confirmed there were no furlough days or school closures and paused next year's budget process to await state details on instructional time rules. KVAL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Eugene Public Works Engineering division finished the second seismic bridge retrofit on May 22 as part of its plan to boost local safety, while a third upgrade is scheduled for 2027 to strengthen infrastructure. NBC 16
- ➤ The office of Congresswoman Val Hoyle and airport management announced that Eugene Airport was selected for a $2 million FAA grant to upgrade its baggage handling system. The project will modernize terminal operations and support growing travel demand for more than 1,200 local workers. NBC 16
- ➤ Oregon Summer EBT will help families buy groceries with $120 per child on Oregon EBT cards during summer break; benefits for eligible children will be automatically issued starting June 4 if receiving SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, or similar assistance, while those applying must submit by Sept. 1 (applications open June 5). - ➤ Bloodworks Northwest is asking for blood donations as its supply of blood and platelets remains low with the 100 deadliest days (a period from Memorial Day to Labor Day known for more teen traffic crashes) underway; local donors can check the organization’s social media pages for nearby events. - ➤ PeaceHealth opened its outpatient lab service on April 29 at its Riverbend Annex in Springfield to speed up bloodwork and lower costs for patients — wait times dropped to about 16 hours with one bill replacing separate charges.
