  • Lane County Human Services data from January 29 showed that 3,509 people experienced homelessness, a 14% increase from 2024 and a 24% increase from 2023—officials said a housing shortage is a key factor.  KEZI
  • Acorn Community Café in Eugene is feeding those in need for free using a pay-it-forward model that asks patrons to donate money for meal vouchers amid sweeping cuts to assistance programs—its approach offers brunch and dinner near West 7th Alley and Monroe. Co-owner Miranda Mckeever said her program, inspired by personal experiences with food insecurity and the challenges of the COVID pandemic, continues to help local residents.  KEZI

  • Yesterday, three Indonesian garment worker activists held a renaming ceremony outside Hayward Field during the OSAA State Track & Field Championships, calling the stadium 'Hidup Buruh'—meaning 'Long Live the Workers.'   • Local art events offer something for everyone this weekend—Native artist Don Bailey leads the ‘Tell Me a Story’ exhibition at the Indigenous-owned Don Dexter Gallery on Saturday, May 31 at 1:00 p.m., Dot Dotson’s hosts a photography exhibit and auction through May and June, and an open studio is available at Blunt Graffix at 3709 W. 1st Street from 10 to 5.  KLCC
  • Today, the first-ever Eugene Neurodivergent Art and Performance Expo takes place at the Farmers Market Pavilion in downtown Eugene and will feature over 80 artists, performers, and food vendors in a free, all-ages event that highlights neurodivergent expression—donations will support the performers.  KLCC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oregon Allergy Associates in Eugene reported very high grass pollen levels in South Willamette Valley because of warm, sunny weather, and they said pollen counts will remain high from late May through early July. They warned that slight rain may break the pollen into smaller pieces — which could increase allergy and asthma symptoms.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials are seeking a developer to build housing on the North Butterfly Lot next to the Farmer’s Market Pavilion, a half-acre parcel bought from Lane County in 2019. Developers must submit mixed-use, pedestrian friendly proposals by the end of July & the Urban Renewal Agency Board will review them based on fiscal feasibility and design fit to revitalize downtown.  KLCC

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced plans to drop COVID vaccine guidance for pregnant women and healthy children, and Lane County’s Senior Public Health Officer Patrick Luedtke said the decision conflicted with FDA data — noting that pregnant women face high risks if they get sick and that insurance may not cover the shot if recommendations change. He also asked how federal officials define a 'healthy' child for future vaccine plans.  KLCC
