EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educator EJ Rotherham, who served Springfield Public Schools for 30 years, died after a massive heart attack on Memorial Day morning and is deeply missed by his family and community. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 7 at Northwood Christian Church from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. — guests are asked to wear red and white to honor his Cornhuskers heritage — while support is offered to those affected by his loss.  NBC 16

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Federal agencies approved the Elliott State Research Forest’s Habitat Conservation Plan, which will protect species like the marbled murrelet, northern spotted owl, and Oregon Coast coho salmon as the forest prepares to launch operations this year. The plan allows timber harvest and restoration while details for two-year management and research projects are finalized (with input from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA Fisheries) and covers 83,000 acres (managed by the Department of State Lands).  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Eugene released its two-year Housing Implementation Pipeline Report today—this plan shows progress on housing and homelessness with 102 new permanent supportive housing units, 70 affordable home ownership units, and 2,385 new housing permits in fiscal years 2023-24 while warning that more resources are needed to reach future goals.  KVAL
  • The Bureau of Land Management will start a four-hour parking limit at West Eugene Wetlands effective July 5th to let more visitors enjoy disc golf, picnicking, hiking, and birdwatching. Signs will be posted and law enforcement will increase patrols to address public safety issues over abandoned hazardous materials.  KVAL
  • Lane County commissioners will interview acting sheriff Carl Wilkerson on June 11 at 1 p.m.—he is the only qualified candidate after former sheriff Cliff Harrold left for PeaceHealth and, if confirmed, he will serve until the end of 2026.  KLCC
