CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Earlier this year, Georgia Baxter-Krause of J.H. Baxter pleaded guilty to violating environmental laws and misleading federal regulators, resulting in a $1.5 million fine and a 90-day prison sentence. She has delayed her incarceration until Oct 1 — saying she needs to care for her husband and manage issues at the shuttered wood-treatment plant — which leaves restitution for affected residents uncertain. - ➤ James Kroner's new exhibition at the Karin Clarke Gallery shows oil paintings that blend realism and impressionism and capture changing light and weather—Patrick Plaia presents his local views at the O'Brien Gallery while Susan Applegate features her piece Final Moonset in the Legacy show at Maude Kerns Art Center. - ➤ The Shelton McMurphy Johnson House in Eugene is now showing a traveling exhibit about Letitia Carson (one of Oregon’s first Black homesteaders) that tells the story of her struggle to keep her land. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Oregon graduation ceremonies kick off today and run through Monday as new data shows a rising unemployment rate for bachelor's degree recipients with nearly half working in jobs that do not require a degree. Paul Timmins at the Career Center said graduates can continue working with a career coach after they leave—ensuring they get lasting support in their job search. KVAL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Eugene City Council approved $700,000 from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund to support three low-income housing projects — Legacy Park with $373,832, Park Run with $200,000 and The Lucy with $136,047 — that will provide 241 affordable rental units and community spaces for low-income residents. This award marks the fifth year of fund use and builds on $4 million that has supported 485 affordable homes. KVAL
- ➤ Lane County Commissioners appointed longtime deputy Carl Wilkerson as sheriff after he was sworn in on Wednesday. Wilkerson, a 30-year veteran who served as a traffic officer, detective, and chief deputy, will work to address staffing shortfalls amid a budget crisis—he will serve through the end of 2026. KLCC
- ➤ Eugene city council approved $700,000 for three affordable housing projects—Legacy Park along River Road, Park Run on South Garden Way, and The Lucy on Hunsaker Lane—that will add 241 new affordable rental units. Construction will begin this year, with Legacy Park and The Lucy set to finish next year—Park Run will complete in 2027. KLCC
- ➤ Immigration advocates say ICE agents in Eugene detained immigrants and stopped lawyers from entering the office during routine check-ins—actions that may breach a law requiring access to legal help. Lawyers reported that individuals from rural areas were taken into detention while community members marched downtown Wednesday evening. KLCC
- ➤ The Senate voted 15—14 to reject SB 916 that would give striking workers unemployment checks after a key sponsor flipped his vote. Lawmakers will meet in a conference committee Tuesday to try a compromise on the bill amid concerns from employers and local governments. KLCC
