COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 6,000 people attended the peaceful 'No Kings' protest on Saturday near the federal courthouse on 8th Avenue as protesters voiced their concerns over federal policies and immigration enforcement. Police Chief Chris Skinner said organizers and officers coordinated a strong effort—led by the 50-50-1 group—to ensure safety in downtown Eugene.  KVAL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-vehicle crash on June 16th blocked northbound lanes on Highway 99 near Roosevelt Boulevard when a speeding Lexus RX slid into a Dodge Ram and sent its 19-year-old driver to a local hospital — the other driver was not injured and the 19-year-old was cited for careless driving.  KEZI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gasoline prices in Eugene have risen slightly to an average of $3.81 per gallon after a 0.7 cent increase in the past week, according to a GasBuddy survey. Patrick De Haan warned that ongoing tensions in the Middle East could cause further modest increases in the coming days.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City began retrofitting the Bailey Hill Bridge in June to help it withstand a major earthquake and ensure emergency responders can reach West Eugene and Churchill. Bailey Hill Road is closed to through traffic from June 16 through the end of August — only local access is allowed.  City of Eugene
  • Lane County’s deflection program, started last October with $2.1 million in state funding, has helped more than 170 people avoid court while only 12 have finished the process and nearly half have been removed, leaving many at risk of future charges. The program uses peer navigators near downtown Eugene—helping people with substance disorders access housing and treatment—and officials warn that rising enrollments may require more resources.  KLCC
  • Governor Tina Kotek proposed last month using some of Oregon's kicker funds for wildfire suppression & mitigation, with the extra revenue expected to hit $1.6 billion. Lawmakers continue to debate the plan while House Minority Leader Christine Drazan said the funds should go back to taxpayers.  NBC 16
