COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lane County Parks is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Howard Buford Park to mark trail upgrades that include improved accessibility and a new trail route through forest for wildlife protection—Friends of Buford Park secured a state grant and voter-approved levy funds for the work—and the public is invited to attend, though parking is limited east of the trailhead on Ridgeway Road.  KVAL

  • Eugene's new premium indoor golf simulation, The Back Nine, is hosting its grand opening this weekend at 1550 Coburg Rd from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The center offers 24/7 bays so players can work on their swing and will have food, drinks, prizes (and more).  NBC 16

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials at the Oregon Health Authority explained that they monitor lakes for cyanobacteria by testing water and using satellite tools around busy swimming areas—recent tests at Fern Ridge found no toxins. They urge residents to check local health and park staff for current advisories before swimming.  NBC 16

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Eugene 4J district recently sent parents water testing results that showed some school systems had lead levels above safe limits—testing is only done every six years. District spokesperson Kelly McIver said any water with high lead is removed immediately as health officials work to ensure safety.  NBC 16
  • Parents received the 2025 water testing results from Eugene 4J schools that showed lead levels above safe limits. District spokesperson Kelly McIver said affected systems will be decontaminated immediately—officials are working to improve how the test findings are communicated.  KVAL
  • Officials from the Oregon Health Authority reported that testing at Fern Ridge during the recent cyanobacteria bloom did not detect toxins and advised swimmers, children, and dogs to avoid areas with dense blooms given the warm water conditions. The agency is investigating fish tissue for toxins and recommends proper fish preparation—filleting and discarding entrails—to reduce health risks.  KVAL
  • The McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center is introducing a groundbreaking aquablation therapy for men with enlarged prostates that uses robotics and artificial intelligence to create an open channel in about 10 minutes—providing a less invasive option for treating BPH. Portland is the only other Oregon location offering this procedure.  KEZI

  • The Eugene Pro Rodeo will run from July 3 through July 6 at the Oregon Horse Center in Eugene and will feature rodeo events such as mutton busting and a calf scramble with themed nights. Theme nights will include Tough Enough to Wear Pink on July 3, Military Appreciation with a fireworks finale on July 4, First Responders on July 5, and Family Day on July 6 when gates open at 1 p.m.—visitors should check details before arriving.  KVAL
