ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA added the J.H. Baxter wood treatment facility in West Eugene to its Superfund list to provide federal funding for cleaning up decades of chemical pollution from creosote and dioxins. Officials plan a public meeting (at Cascade Middle School, July 16, 6 to 8 p.m.) to explain next steps for the long-term cleanup (residents are encouraged to attend).  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, June 16, the Eugene Springfield Fire faced a shortage of ambulances as rising emergency calls sometimes left only one advanced life support unit available (10 ambulances serve 16 stations). The city passed an 18% stormwater fee increase and may add a fire service fee in November to help fix the resource strain.  KVAL

  • At the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Kenyan runners Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet broke world records in the 1,500 and 5,000 races, and top finishers from the Paris Olympics ran in the women's 100 race—marking the meet's 50th anniversary.  KLCC
  • On Sunday, the Eugene Challengers won the Papa's Pizza American Legion Championship with a 32–3 victory that featured a 12–0 shutout after five innings—extending a four-game win streak with a combined margin of 45–13.
