COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Protesters gathered outside the Eugene Federal Building on July 8 to oppose deportations and secret detentions by ICE—immigration rights advocates led the demonstration and said they will continue to protest at upcoming local meetings. Organizers plan to raise their concerns with city leaders at future council and police commission meetings.  NBC 16

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lane County Sheriff’s deputies and Junction City Police found Mary Ann Snoddy, 62, dead in her 2006 Chevy Malibu—crashed several days earlier and lying about 30 feet down an embankment on Territorial Highway south of Cheshire.  KVAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Eugene Police say bike thefts are up this summer as thieves target busy spots like the UO campus and downtown library branch (with a 15 percent recovery rate) by taking unlocked wheels, and they urge cyclists to lock both wheels and the frame securely.  NBC 16
  • Lane County deputies arrested three people after a dispute at a Triangle Lake campground on July 5 when they responded at 11 p.m. and found Eugene resident Karmen Marie Sauers under the influence and threatening with a pink handgun, plus evidence from vehicles led to arresting 49-year-old Loren Joseph Imponen for theft and citing 63-year-old Kirby Edward Sauers for DUI.  KEZI
  • On July 5 at 11 p.m. in Triangle Lake Park, deputies arrested Karmen Sauers for DUII, menacing, and unlawful weapon use after witnesses reported she threatened people with a pink handgun and deputies found a stolen firearm and pepper spray pistol in her car—deputies also detained Kirby Sauers for DUII and arrested Loren Imponen for first-degree theft.  NBC 16

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 56th annual Oregon Country Fair will open Friday in Veneta with 260 craft booths and 17 stages spread over a winding 1.5-mile trail known as the 'eight'—a design meant to ensure easy access. Organizers say visitors should buy tickets online and take advantage of free bus rides with a fair pass while enjoying live music, multicultural food and varied performances.  KLCC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene was named one of Oregon Business Magazine’s 2025 100 Best Green Workplaces and placed sixty-eighth with a score of 241.24. The shelter has upgraded its facilities with energy-efficient LED light fixtures, improved heating and wastewater systems, and adopted paperless and recycling practices+ aiming to reduce its environmental footprint.  NBC 16

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Chambers Street and West 11th Avenue intersection will be closed for repaving from July 17 through July 24 and detour routes will be set up for cars, bikes, and pedestrians—drivers are advised to use Polk or Arthur/Garfield to access nearby businesses while construction continues to improve roadway safety.  City of Eugene

  • McKenzie Dental Practices of Oregon is opening a new dental-assisting school in Springfield that will offer an accelerated four-month program enrolling up to 10 students per term. Three instructors with over 70 years of combined experience and director James Lee believe the program will help fill a shortage of skilled dental staff following COVID.  KEZI
