- ➤ Eugene Springfield Fire officials say a series of suspicious brush fires are under investigation with no suspect named yet — they note that over 70% of wildfires in Oregon are human-caused and urge residents to follow wildfire safety rules as concerns rise over potential links to social issues. - ➤ On July 12 around 7:30 a.m., a Eugene Police officer searching Skinner Butte Park found nearly 4 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms + a loaded handgun with bullets along with other drugs during a stop for illegal camping, arresting 19-year-old Logan Michael Siddons and charging 20-year-old Aubrey Michelle Pickhard with breaking park rules. - ➤ A Springfield credit union employee faces charges for stealing nearly $75,000 from six members over the past six months after police received documents and surveillance on July 4, with charges including four counts of first-degree theft, two counts of aggravated first-degree theft, and one count of computer crime (employee Laila Payne admitted to making unauthorized transfers and withdrawals). - ➤ A Springfield man was arrested in Aberdeen after his vehicle was flagged by a license plate reader—he faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson for the mobile home fire on July 9 that killed his grandmother and uncle, with investigators finding evidence consistent with molotov cocktails and extradition to Lane County pending. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A study led by James Johnston at the University of Oregon shows that one in four ancient trees in Eastern Oregon died between (2012 and 2023) due to drought, insect infestations, and competition with younger trees. The research warns that less than one-fourth of old-growth trees may remain in the next (50 to 60 years) without active forest management. KVAL

- ➤ House Speaker Julie Fahey said lawmakers will return to the transportation funding issue in a future session or special session as the legislative session ended June 27 without a bill—ODOT already made nearly 500 layoffs with 12 maintenance stations closed statewide and 200 more layoffs expected next year due to the bill's failure. - ➤ The Eugene Water & Electric Board is preparing for wildfire season by dedicating 30% of its Electric Capital Improvement Plan budget over the next decade to boost system resilience. The board activated Wildfire Safety Settings in high fire risk zones and approved a 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Plan using AI & satellite tools, grant funding and other measures to reduce risks. KEZI
- ➤ On Monday, Eugene’s City Council voted to pull the fire services fee from the November ballot after business leaders opposed it and a signature drive blocked early collection — prompting approval of a temporary stormwater fee expected to bring in $4.7 million a year to ease a budget shortfall. Councilors said they made the decision to prevent public confusion even as some warned it could lead to future budget challenges. KLCC
