  • Local educators, parents and KLCC listeners worry that a new rescissions bill could cut about $300,000 in federal funding from KLCC beginning in October—KLCC's general manager says the station will remain on air while expansion plans are reassessed.  NBC 16

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 16, Lane County deputies responded to a fatal shooting near the 28600 block of W. Hill Road east of Lorane and, after locating a deceased victim, arrested suspect Ralph William McSperitt on July 17 in front of the Lane County Jail—he now faces a charge of murder in the 2nd degree.  KVAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eugene artist David Graves will exhibit THE FUTURE BELONGS HERE in Monroe Park on Sunday, July 20 and Thursday, July 24 (6 to 8 p.m.), where four speakers will play park sounds that have been recorded and turned into ambient music. The installation draws on local recordings made this year to create a unique sound experience.  KLCC
  • The Oregon Asian Celebration will mark its 40th festival on Saturday, July 19 at Alton Baker Park in Eugene from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The free event, organized by the Asian American Council of Oregon, is expected to draw more than 15,000 visitors to enjoy diverse Asian cultures—ranging from Balinese dancing to Japanese Taiko drumming and Thai cuisine.  KLCC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lane County approved Sierra Pacific Industries' $253 million investment application under the Oregon Strategic Investment Program, a move that is set to boost local revenue by adding about $21.9 million in new property taxes and over $1 million for the fire service. The decision—approved by the county board on June 10 and the Business Development Commission on July 11—marked a new chapter for regional growth.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Six high schoolers from the Northwest Youth Corps have been working in a five-week summer conservation program in Eugene since June 23, arriving daily at 7:30 a.m. at the headquarters on Augusta Street in Laurel Hill to clear nonnative plants and tend urban rain gardens. Their work helps reduce wildfire risks and improve water quality + earns them stipends and high school credit.  KLCC
  • Officials from the EPA and DEQ met Wednesday night at Cascade Middle School in Eugene to outline next steps in cleaning up the J.H. Baxter site in the Bethel and Trainsong neighborhoods. The plan includes a long-term study to find remaining chemicals and guide further removal actions (the cleanup comes after nearly 80 years of industrial contamination).  NBC 16

  • KLCC public radio in Eugene may lose $300,000 in federal funding starting in October due to a rescissions bill in congress—raising concerns among local educators and listeners about delaying planned news team expansions.   • The City of Eugene is accepting applications for exemptions from local system development charges to support affordable housing projects, with applications due by September 10.
