Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 22nd of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eugene Astronomical Society held its first summer Dark Sky Party Saturday night at Dexter State Recreation Site—15 miles southeast of Eugene—where over 200 residents used dozens of telescopes to view red giants, the Milky Way, and stellar births. The free event also featured a raffle awarding a telescope and a membership to a young attendee; upcoming parties are set for Aug.15 and Sept.12.  KLCC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • BRING Recycling in Eugene received a $125,000 DEQ 'Reduce, Reuse, Reimagine' grant to fund its Demo to Design project that hires a materials recovery coordinator to collect construction site materials using on-site trailers. The organization will also invest in a CNC machine to transform recovered materials into new products—improving recycling efficiency and supporting local sustainability.  KEZI
  • Lane County power utilities use automated reclosers that cut off power in less than a tenth of a second and clear vegetation from power lines to lower wildfire risks. They will enact power shut-offs during dangerous winds and give customers 24-48 hours notice — a measure coordinated with weather data and local plans — to help keep sparks from spreading into fires.  KLCC
  • The University of Oregon Hazards Lab upgraded an earthquake sensor station at Huckleberry Mountain Lookout near Oakridge using small batteries to ease the climb and improve early detection. The team (with help from the US Geological Survey and University of Washington) will keep monitoring the 200+ stations that send real-time data to help ShakeAlert warn residents before shaking starts.  KLCC

FINANCE NEWS

  • Lane Thompson, an Oregon ombud, explained that new federal student loan rules led to 95 complaints from June 1 to May 31 and may limit repayment options as changes from a spending bill complicate access to income-driven repayment and public service loan forgiveness (borrowers also reported scam concerns).  NBC 16

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Club of Eugene hosted a discussion on immigration enforcement and due process on July 21 — with panelists including experts in social science, immigration law, and community services — that examined historical laws and modern ICE practices and their effect on deportation and civil rights. The panel offered insights into how longstanding policies continue to shape experiences for both citizens and immigrants.  KLCC
