CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Kev Hill, a 22-year-old Black man, filed a civil rights lawsuit against Lane County—its mounted posse and the county fair—for an alleged assault in 2023 in a church parking lot, saying he was tackled and pinned during an asthma attack after being racially profiled following a shooting the day before. - ➤ Lane County deputies arrested two men—Tafoya and Miller—after they reportedly hit and robbed a man during a cash sale at Perkins Peninsula Park around 1:00 p.m. and later found them on Butler Road where most of the stolen money was recovered; both now face charges for robbery, assault, theft and interfering with reporting. - ➤ Eugene police said a 45-year-old man—Joseph Jay Sweat—was cited for reckless driving and hit and run after he tailgated another vehicle and caused his Ford Fiesta to strike an Acura MDX at South Garden Way and Commons Drive on Monday evening, and he later received treatment at a local hospital. - ➤ On July 16, 2025, the Eugene Police Traffic Safety Unit and partner agencies conducted a speed saturation patrol across major roads in the Eugene metro area that resulted in 184 traffic stops—111 citations, 93 warnings, 3 arrests, and various other violations. NBC 16
- ➤ Gov. Tina Kotek has called lawmakers to a special session starting August 29 to pass funding for essential transportation projects and stop further layoffs at ODOT—483 workers had already been laid off after the legislature failed to pass the previous bill. The session will focus on securing funds to stabilize basic operations and support local transit districts. KVAL
- ➤ City officials said the contractor assigned to the Chambers Street Connector Bridge seismic upgrade has resumed work this week — removing rubblized concrete and installing shoring at both ends. The city said motorists can expect lane restrictions and detours during peak travel hours. KEZI
- ➤ Governor Tina Kotek signed House Bills 2065 and 2066, laws that let communities build microgrids in urban, suburban, and rural areas—systems that provide power when the main grid fails—while cutting costs during emergencies like wildfires and earthquakes.
