COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Positive Community Kitchen has served healing meals at an incubator kitchen on Shelton McMurphey Boulevard in Eugene for over a decade, offering locally sourced, medically tailored dishes to about 100 seriously ill clients and their families each week—most of whom are cancer patients. The project began when high school students responded to the tragic deaths of two classmates in 2011—sparking a community effort that now welcomes volunteers of all ages.  KLCC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eugene will soon have nonstop flights to Burbank because Alaska Airlines will start a daily flight on October 26 while Avelo Airlines serves until December 1—after a gap of three and a half months, Breeze Airways will begin flights on March 19. Alaska Airlines will also launch service from Burbank to Redmond and Pasco on October 26.  KLCC

CRIME NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Eugene police arrested 59-year-old James Thomas Lynch after a bystander reported seeing him expose himself near Amazon Pool—officers used a drone to locate his Toyota Camry as swimmers attended lessons and he was taken to Lane County Jail.  NBC 16
  • On Wednesday, July 30 at 2:37 p.m., Springfield police responded to a disorderly call at a business on Gateway Street and Kruse Way and found a suspect who brandished two knives and stabbed two officers before he was shot and killed — the injured officers were taken to a local hospital.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Tina Kotek hosted an event in Eugene on Thursday to celebrate the signing of four bipartisan bills that will give more money and clearer rules to local schools—these laws set up a statewide system to track progress and a two-year funding plan that will start to change practices by the 2026-27 school year.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek reinforced the cellphone ban in K-12 classrooms during a ceremonial signing at Prairie Mountain School in Eugene on July 31 — she linked the ban to new student success bills aimed at reducing anxiety, depression, and self-harm. The order allows exceptions for emergencies when parents coordinate with school staff.  KVAL
