ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Monday afternoon, a fire started in a grass field near the Oregon Horse Center in Eugene and quickly spread to wood pallets, forcing dozens of horses and handlers to evacuate to a safe barn—multiple agencies responded and the fire is now under control.  NBC 16
  • On Friday, August 1 at 4:30 p.m., a 2010 Subaru Impreza hit an ATV crossing Crow Road southeast of Veneta, killing the ATV operator Scott Alan Kayser, 63 of Eugene—Lane County Sheriff’s deputies, State Police troopers and fire personnel responded and closed the road for about three hours.  NBC 16

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eyes off Eugene (a local group) said the new privacy safeguards do not stop the planned license plate camera system from tracking vehicles and risking the surveillance of marginalized communities and the breach of sanctuary law. The group will meet with lawmakers and ask city councils to end their contracts when meetings resume after summer break.  KLCC
  • Approximately 230 soldiers from the Oregon National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 218th Field Artillery Regiment returned to Oregon this past weekend after a year-long deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve—adding to reports that about 300 personnel from the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team returned on July 19 from a Kosovo deployment. These returns mark significant steps in ending extended overseas missions for the state’s National Guard forces.  KLCC

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study shows that walking can help lower the risk of Alzheimer’s and experts at Community Health Centers of Lane County say that even a short walk each day helps keep the heart—brain healthy. The center will host National Health Centers week with events like Staff Appreciation Day and classes on managing diabetes to remind residents to keep up with check-ups.  KVAL
  • A new study from Community Health Centers of Lane County shows that regular walking may lower the risk of Alzheimer’s, which affects 7.2 million Americans over 65, as Brianna Axline explained that physical activity improves heart and brain health. The center will host National Health Centers events next week (including Staff Appreciation Day and Living Well with Diabetes classes) to encourage preventive care for those at higher risk.  NBC 16

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday at Hayward Field, Oregon great Raevyn Rogers qualified for the women's 800-meter final with a time of 1:58.74 while former Ducks Jenna Prandini and English Gardner reached the 11M final in the women's 100-meter race as they fight for a spot on Team USA—these results mark Day 2 of the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships.  KVAL
  • After 12 seasons, Lane United FC said goodbye to Civic Park during a farewell celebration at Oakshire Public House and will launch a professional men's team in USL League One in 2026—with plans for a women's team to follow and the club set to play at Civic Park instead of the USL League 2 team.  NBC 16
  • Noah Lyles won the 200-meter race at Hayward Field in Eugene by finishing .04 seconds ahead of Kenny Bednarek, who shoved him and exchanged heated words with him (they shook hands after the race). A rematch is set for Sept. 19 in Tokyo at the world championships.  KLCC
