- ➤ On Friday, Eugene crowned Hilaria Gastrognome as the new S.L.U.G. Queen after she bested Luke N. GOO’d and Marcel Slugcasso—she thanked supporters for wearing pink, holding signs, and chanting at her speech. KLCC
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fire crews have made progress containing the Aubrey Mountain Fire east of Oakridge — evacuation orders on Roberts Ranch and Dunning Roads were lowered while Highway 58 now carries one lane. The fire began Thursday afternoon — officials warn that extreme heat and dry conditions may spark new blazes. KLCC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden said he will run for reelection in 2028 at age 79 and has held over 1,100 town meetings across all 36 counties — his many sessions show he values every Oregonian's voice. At a recent town hall in Wasco, he defended age questions — stressing that voters should hold leaders accountable. KLCC
- ➤ Crews from EWEB are starting work on building two new 7.5 million gallon water tanks on College Hill after last year's removal of the old tank. Contractors are pouring floor slabs and installing piping using a 72-inch tunnel from the site to Lincoln and 23rd—this work will close nearby streets until the end of November and involve nearly daily concrete pours through next year. - ➤ An extreme heat watch began on Aug. 10 and will run until 10 p.m. Aug. 12 while local non-profits plan extra support for residents. RAVEN provided extra water at First Christian Church and helped open cooling centers like the Lane Events Center on Aug. 11 — officials remind residents to stay hydrated and check on vulnerable neighbors.
