COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SquareOne Villages acquired the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church property on Maxwell Road and plans to convert it into 44 to 50 affordable homes and community programs — including a food pantry, preschool, and garden — as part of its community land trust with construction set to begin in 2027.  NBC 16

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 21-year-old bicyclist was struck by an Audi A4 on Hilyard Street at about 7:48 p.m. on August 8th and remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries — bystanders performed CPR until emergency services arrived.  KVAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Eugene police reported that Stephen Gwain Hall—a 39-year-old man with special needs and a history of heart problems who is 6’5” tall and weighs 400 pounds—was reported missing on August 12 after his ride to a new apartment did not arrive amid extreme heat, and they ask anyone with information to call 541-682-5111 referencing case number 25-13029.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a lawsuit alleging Endangered Species Act violations was dismissed, EWEB can now continue its temporary catch and haul system for salmon and trout on the McKenzie River—regulatory approvals are still needed before a permanent fish facility at Trail Bridge Dam is completed by 2032.  KVAL
  • Cascades Raptor Center in Eugene introduced two baby owls to its ambassador team today—a baby Snowy Owl and a baby Northern Hawk Owl—and launched a donation campaign through Aug. 18 that offers a chance for a private encounter at special events like Brunch with the Birds.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane County and other dispatch centers are facing a phone outage affecting non-emergency lines—911 remains operational and residents needing urgent help should call 911. The provider Lumen has not provided an estimated repair time, so using cell phones is recommended.  KEZI
  • Lane County has hired Tommy Gong, a long-time California elections administrator, as its new county clerk after a national search—he succeeded Dena Dawson who left to lead elections for the Oregon Secretary of State. He joined last month — and will use his 20 years of experience to modernize the clerk's office with public outreach and updated legal functions.  KLCC

HEALTH NEWS

  • PeaceHealth announced the opening of Valley River Pediatric Priority Care Clinic at 1400 Valley River Dr in Eugene today, a new urgent care that will treat children from newborn to 18 with services like X-ray and lab draws—offering lower costs and insurance acceptance with sliding fees—and will operate evenings, weekends and holidays starting September 1 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.  NBC 16
