CRIME NEWS

  • Lane County deputies arrested two individuals at a campground near Fall Creek Reservoir on August 14 after reports came in at 4 p.m. of a man chasing people with a pistol — Randy Kurtis Bounds and Amber Nicole Tyrone were taken into custody.  KEZI
  • Eugene police arrested a convicted felon on August 14 after a license plate reader helped locate him following an August 13 incident when he menaced a man with a handgun and rammed his car at 3800 Barger Drive—officers later found several weapons and charged him with felon possession of a firearm, menacing, and reckless driving.  KVAL
  • Law enforcement agencies across Oregon will launch a DUII blitz and enhanced seatbelt checks as children get ready to return to school, and the Eugene Police Department advises drivers to use a designated driver. Captain Sean Sanborn said the initiative aims to reduce crashes and injuries — the seatbelt enforcement runs through Aug. 31 while the DUII crackdown ends Sept. 1.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A federal judge vacated the DOE—Dear Colleague letter and certification requirement so 4J School District will keep $18 million in federal funding for diversity programs. School board spokesperson Jenny Jonak said the ruling lets the district focus on teaching while it prepares for a possible appeal as funding challenges continue.  NBC 16
  • 4J School District won a federal lawsuit against the Department of Education—this verdict prevents the loss of $18 million in DEI funding. The district said it may face an appeal, so its funding outlook remains uncertain.  KVAL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Slocum Orthopedics will break ground on a new 34,000 square foot ambulatory surgery center on Chad Drive in Eugene in September—this facility will house eight operating rooms and support 23-hour overnight surgery recovery as it is set to open in spring.   KVAL
