COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, September 21st, the Nobel Peace Park Community Festival will run from 12-4 p.m. at Nobel Peace Park inside Alton Baker Park, featuring live performances, arts and crafts, food trucks, games, and awards in celebration of the International Day of Peace with a focus on youth. Eugene Mayor Kaarin Knudson and Marcus Nobel will meet the public as part of the free event.  KVAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Lane County Sheriff's deputies and Oregon State Police assisted traffic control near Highway 58 — milepost 22 on August 23 at 5:30 p.m. after a silver Pontiac driven by 25-year-old Dunken Deshaun Joshua Thornton passed a Kia minivan in a no-passing zone and forced an oncoming vehicle to swerve; authorities arrested Thornton for reckless driving, property damage, and reckless endangering and ask anyone in the oncoming vehicle to contact the sheriff’s office using case #25-3999.  KVAL
  • A stolen Toyota RAV4 reported on Green Acres Road on August 24 was recovered on Norkenzie Road at Holly Avenue in Eugene after police were alerted by a license plate reader camera—its owner in his 50s was promptly notified.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire officials say the Emigrant Fire has burned 9,054 acres near Indigo Springs Campground and remains 0% contained as winds, slope alignment and dry fuels speed its spread. They expect extremely low humidity on Thursday to spark spot fires that will threaten firefighters and control lines.  KVAL
  • Fire officials reported that the lightning-caused Emigrant Fire burned an estimated 9,054 acres in a remote area three miles southwest of Indigo Springs Campground because of strong winds, dry fuels, and steep slopes—while crews worked to contain several spot fires ignited by airborne embers that challenged the containment lines.  NBC 16

  • The Eugene Police Department is working with school districts to rehearse active shooter procedures as the new school year nears. Officers will be at schools next week during drop-off, pick-up, and lunch hours—parents are urged to stay calm and follow official guidance.  KVAL
  • Residents east of Central Road in Veneta from Halderson Road to the stretch between Perkins and Cantrell Roads are told by the Lane County Sheriff's Office to evacuate immediately as an approaching wildfire threatens the area. They must leave without gathering belongings and drive carefully with headlights on + follow responder instructions and local news updates for shelter information.  KEZI
