COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Springfield gathered on Monday morning to protest the new Flock cameras placed along Pioneer Parkway and Hayden Bridge Way—residents say the taxpayer-funded system records license plates and threatens their privacy while police claim it helps solve crimes.  NBC 16
  • The University of Oregon is planning road closures and traffic restrictions this week as about 5,000 new students move in on Thursday and Friday. Drivers are urged to work remotely, bike, or take the bus, and Agate Street will be closed—traffic on 13th, 15th, and 17th avenues will be limited to staff and students.  KLCC
  • A horse trapped in a well on Monday was safely rescued by Eugene Police Community Service Officers and local firefighters who used a drone to monitor the situation—ensuring the animal was freed.  NBC 16
  • On September 23, protestors in Eugene rallied at the Federal Building to oppose ICE detentions and support immigrant rights (flyers urged Portlanders to join in extra solidarity).  NBC 16

  • Eugene Airport is expanding its non-stop flight options — Alaska Airlines begins daily service to Hollywood Burbank on Oct. 26 and Breeze Airways plans a new route in March with connections to Provo — and travelers are advised to check flight and parking details to avoid delays during the busy holiday season.  City of Eugene

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers from Springfield and Lincoln County School Districts were named by the state as finalists for Oregon Teacher of the Year — one of 16 educators honored for their skills, leadership, and community work. Kacey Baxter of Newport Middle School and Sally Golden of Community Transition Program in Springfield will each receive a $1,000 award.  KLCC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters are battling the Emigrant Fire that has spread to 32,734 acres—a rise detected through improved infrared mapping—and warmer, drier conditions later this week are expected to boost fire activity.  KEZI
  • Local land managers plan controlled burns this fall in several areas in and around Eugene Springfield — including Coburg Hills, Mt. Pisgah, Dorris Ranch, Willow Creek Preserve, West Eugene Wetlands, Coyote Creek Area, Camp Creek Road and Oak and Prairie Habitats. The burns aim to reduce wildfire risk, provide training for first responders and link the community with traditional land management practices, with dates set based on weather and available resources.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Eugene’s Independent Police Auditor found that the police department did not violate Oregon’s sanctuary law during an ICE protest at the federal building on July 1. The investigation reviewed body camera footage, incident reports, and dispatch records (showing that officers responded only to safety calls) and confirmed that no arrests were made.  NBC 16
  • Downtown Eugene protestors gathered yesterday at the Federal Building to oppose ICE detentions and support immigrant rights — flyers urged Portlanders to join the rally from 2 p.m. yesterday to 2 a.m. today. The protest follows months of heated demonstrations amid reports of federal officers pushing demonstrators during previous rallies.  KVAL
  • Residents in Springfield protested Monday morning against new surveillance cameras installed at Pioneer Parkway and Hayden Bridge Way — critics say these taxpayer-funded devices record vehicle license plates without proper public oversight. The cameras help police with investigations and have previously contributed to arrests in Eugene.  KVAL

  • University of Oregon alum Cole Hocker won the men’s 5,000m gold at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo after he was disqualified from the 1,500m earlier in the week — his victory marks his first world title for Team USA and makes him only the second American to win the event.  KLCC
