COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Some Eugene protesters fear that a National Guard deployment like Portland’s could scare people from joining protests, while others say not protesting will only weaken their voice. They will hold their anti-ICE protest today in front of the Eugene Federal Building—stressing the need for safe public action.  KVAL
  • Community ambassadors, The American Cancer Society, and Men Wear Pink will hold the tenth annual Power of Pink Walk on Sunday, October 5 to raise breast cancer awareness in Lane County. University of Oregon football players will take part—urging locals to wear pink in support and honor those affected.  KVAL
  • University Park in Eugene will begin renovations tomorrow as fences go up to mark a project that will add new lighting, a playground, a basketball court, seating and picnic areas—funded by a Parks and Recreation Bond and supported by a 2023 levy.  KVAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Lane County officials condemned white supremacist flyers posted around Eugene and Springfield on Tuesday, September 23rd; the Oregon Department of Justice is reviewing the flyers and will announce next steps once clarification is received.  NBC 16

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy's survey of 1,307 stations showed that Oregon gas prices decreased by 4.3 cents per gallon over the past week to an average of $4.15—though prices remain 53.4 cents higher than last year. Prices in Eugene also fell 7.2 cents last week to $4.01 as seasonal factors shift gasoline demand.  NBC 16
  • GasBuddy's survey shows Oregon gasoline prices dropped by 4.3 cents per gallon in the past week to average $4.15 today, though they still remain 20.9 cents above last month and 53.4 cents above last year. Eugene gas is now $4.01 per gallon—down 7.2 cents—reflecting the state's overall trend.  KVAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Willamette National Forest has eased its emergency closure order for the Emigrant Fire, reducing restrictions on certain roads and trailheads while keeping other areas closed. The updated order is effective from September 29 through October 31—firefighters reduced hazards from the lightning-started blaze that spread over 33,096 acres.  KVAL
  • Wildfire smoke from the Moon Complex Fire has led to an air quality advisory that began Monday for the western coastal mountain range from Mapleton to Veneta—Eugene-Springfield sees intermittent poor air and LRAPA expects conditions to remain unhealthy through Tuesday evening. The Lane Fire Defense Board and Oregon Department of Forestry have delayed the outdoor burn season to Oct.15—rain and cooler temperatures are expected to help reduce fire risk.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane County is updating its Community Wildfire Protection Plan—inviting residents to complete a survey on wildfire preparedness and smoke impacts before Oct. 17; the survey will help local agencies plan emergency response and prioritize resources amid changing wildfire risks.  KLCC
  • More than a dozen Oregon mayors led by Portland Mayor Keith Wilson signed a joint letter on Sept. 26 that rejected the federal plan to deploy 200 National Guard troops under Title 10 in the Portland area and argued the move violated civil rights. They pledged to oppose the action using legal and legislative steps and held a press event on Sept. 29 at 3 p.m.—measures aimed at protecting local rights.  NBC 16
