COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Willamalane in Springfield is launching its annual Halloween celebrations today with Ghostly Golf—a glow-in-the-dark mini-golf game costing $12 with no advance registration. Additional events include Haunted Hayride from Oct. 16th to 18th with pumpkins lining the trails, a Halloween Carnival on Oct. 26th for children, and Dive-In Movies at the park swim center on Oct. 31st and Nov. 1st at regular rates.  KEZI
  • On Sept. 30, about 50 protesters gathered outside the downtown federal building in a protest organized by the Immigrant Defense Network and the Eugene chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation to demand an end to ICE harassment. Veterans for Peace led the protest with a press conference and interfaith vigil (including singing and poetry), and County Commissioner Laurie Trieger briefly joined (responding to community calls) while officers warned a protester using a bullhorn, with no arrests made.  Eugene Weekly
  • Eugene Police are partnering with Marquis Assisted Living for a safe trick-or-treat drive-by event on October 26 from 2-4 p.m.- children in costumes will receive candy, tour police vehicles, and enjoy a live Navy Band performance. Organizers urge drivers and families to follow safety guidelines during this community event.  KVAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today the Springfield Chamber Foundation awarded $10K in Career and Technical Education grants to four high school programs—North Eugene, Siuslaw, Cottage Grove and Pleasant Hill—that support over 500 students with hands-on learning in robotics, wood milling, industrial automation and AED training. The awards help these schools offer essential tools and materials to build skills for high-demand careers.  KVAL
  • SMART Reading is asking community volunteers to help local students by reading for one hour a week during the school year—this nonprofit will serve 1,288 students and distribute over 18,000 books in Benton, Lane and Linn counties. The effort aims to improve reading skills among Oregon third graders amid a reported literacy crisis.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The University of Oregon has received nearly $500,000 to fund a study on natural hazards like landslides, floods, and wildfires over the next five years. The CLASH program works with other universities to share findings with city planners & improve public safety.  NBC 16
  • Crews with 202 personnel continue battling the Emigrant Fire that is 52% contained on 33,127 acres after recent rain lowered fire activity—Middle Fork Type 3 Team assumed command at 6 p.m. and plans to close the Incident Command Post near Hills Creek Dam by the weekend. Weather forecasts predict warmer conditions that may bring visible smoke to nearby valleys while the forest closure stays in effect.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Administrative Services is preparing new rent rules for 2026—properties 15 years or older will have a rent increase cap of 9.5 percent as set by House Bill 3054. These changes will affect property owners and renters in communities across Oregon.  KEZI
  • Oregon announced changes to food assistance rules required by H.R.1 that tighten eligibility, eliminate exemptions in rural counties, and expand work requirements for adults over 55 and parents of teens in six counties—these adjustments will lower benefit amounts and remove exceptions for groups like the homeless, veterans, and refugees. The new rules apply immediately to new SNAP applications and will phase in for current recipients over the next few months.  KLCC
  • The Oregon DMV halted issuance of non-domiciled Commercial Driver's Licenses and Commercial Learner's Permits due to a new federal rule that took effect on September 29 and now affects about 1,400 temporary license holders. Drivers who meet federal requirements can still operate commercial vehicles but must renew in person — online and mail options are no longer allowed.  KEZI

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.S. Senator Merkley and Representative Hoyle warned today that GOP moves to tie funding bills to cuts in Medicaid and Affordable Care Act subsidies could risk health care access in Oregon. They said these measures may push rural hospitals to the brink and drive higher premiums and coverage loss for about 20,000 in one district and over 30,000 across the state—threatening families.  KVAL
