COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eugene Police Department is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by placing pink ribbons on over 60 vehicles and allowing officers to wear pink shirts—this gesture honors those impacted by the disease and promotes early detection. The campaign runs from October 1 to October 31.  KVAL
  • Greenhill Humane Society is offering half-price adoptions for dogs, cats, and specialized species aged two years and older this October — part of the Subaru Loves Pets campaign — to help place over 250 animals in caring homes. The animals — including Fluffin the chinchilla, Oda the terrier mix, and Leo the 6-year-old cat — are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated.  KEZI

CRIME NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Human Services (Child Welfare Division) said 15-year-old foster child Kylie Rubio went missing from Eugene on Oct. 1, is believed to be in danger and may be in Canby or between Eugene and Portland, and officials urge anyone who sees her to call 911.  KVAL

  • Today, Eugene Public Library invites everyone to celebrate Banned Books Week—an event running from Oct 5 to Oct 11 that defends the right to read and fights against censorship as Library Director Angela Ocaña shares her views on the Inside Eugene podcast.  City of Eugene

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lane Community College began its fall term with new opportunities as it launched a fully online ADN to BSN program (with over 6,700 students enrolled and a reversal of a decade-long decline). Returning students can also apply for the Welcome Back Scholarship offering $500 per term for up to three terms, with applications due by 5 p.m. on Oct. 10.  KEZI
  • Sally Golden—a special education teacher at Two Rivers Dos Rios Elementary School—was named Oregon's Teacher of the Year for 2025-26 during a surprise event in Springfield. She will receive $10,000 from the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Lottery while her program gets $5,000.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal emergency management officials are proposing new NFIP requirements that shift focus to protecting fish habitat with a no net loss rule for floodplain development—affecting 31 counties and 230 communities in Oregon. Construction costs may rise nearly 30% and local governments could incur $23 million to $47 million in added expenses, with communities risking loss of federal flood insurance if the new standards are not adopted by Oct. 6 at 8:59 p.m.—public comments are welcomed before the deadline.  KEZI

  • University of Oregon will host the Walk to End Alzheimer's this Sunday at the Erb Memorial Union after the event moved from Alton Baker Park. The free, family & pet friendly walk starts with check-in at 11 a.m. and opening ceremonies at noon and is expected to draw hundreds of participants.  KEZI
  • Men Wear Pink of Lane County is hosting its second annual Power of Pink walk tomorrow at Autzen Stadium at 9 a.m.—University of Oregon football players will join to support the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer programs.  KEZI
