COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Public Power Week continues through Oct. 12 in Eugene and Springfield, letting residents learn about local utilities’ roles—EWEB holds a poster contest for fifth graders and a Truck or Treat event while Springfield Utility Board offers free coffee and cocoa.  KEZI
  • On Tuesday, Weyerhaeuser donated 38 acres of land in Disston to Row River Fire Response to build a new emergency wildfire protection substation—planned to improve response times in areas like Dorena and Culp Creek. The donation continues Weyerhaeuser's commitment to supporting rural firefighting services—helping keep local communities safer.  KVAL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gem Faire, America’s Premier Gem & Jewelry Show, will be held at Lane Events Center in Eugene from November 7-9. The event charges $7 for adults, offers free entry for children under 12 and free parking, and runs Friday from 12pm to 6pm, Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm with no admittance after 4pm.  KVAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Eugene residents and businesses now follow a new recycling list under the Recycling Modernization Act – it allows items like aseptic containers and plastic tubs starting July 1. The city will use new funds to reduce bin contamination and improve sorting services.  City of Eugene
  • The Emigrant Fire, ignited by lightning on Aug 24, has burned 33,129 acres and is 62% contained with 39 personnel patrolling the area while officials keep the forest closed for safety. Officials said suppression repair work is complete and warned hunters and recreationalists to remain cautious as cooler weather and rain are predicted tonight—smoke may still affect nearby valleys.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon’s special legislative session ended last week and cost taxpayers over $270,000—costs that may exceed $280,000 if lawmakers claim mileage reimbursement—while Gov. Tina Kotek’s $4 billion transportation package was pushed through amid delays from a senator’s illness. Lawmakers earned a $178 per diem each day, prompting criticism over the unexpected spending.  KLCC
  • Lane County is expanding eligibility for affordable housing at the rebuilt Lazy Days Mobile Home and RV Park in upper McKenzie Valley — originally meant only for fire survivors — so renters present during the Holiday Farm fire can now apply online for 1- or 2-bedroom units with utilities included at $750 or $1000 per month.  KLCC
  • The City Club of Eugene and Springfield City Club hosted a two-part series on riverfront development— the first event aired on Oct. 6 featuring Allie Camp discussing the Glenwood Master Plan, while a second event on Oct. 17 will have Will Dowdy presenting further insights.  KLCC

HEALTH NEWS

  • After 5-year-old Jordan Peckels was diagnosed with a high-grade brain tumor in August, his first responder parents and the community rallied strong support. The family will travel to Mayo Clinic in Arizona to start a six-week radiation treatment—Jordan will also turn six on October 29.  NBC 16
