COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, Oct. 18, Egan Warming Centers will host a donation sorting event at the Cleveland Warehouse on 135 N Cleveland St. in Eugene (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) where volunteers will inventory a medical connex box and sort clothing donations, and lunch will be provided.  KVAL
  • Market of Choice is hosting a fall food drive at its four Eugene locations from Oct. 9 through Nov. 30 while Food for Lane County is matching donations up to $10,000—Rebecca Sprinson said the drive is needed as federal cuts have reduced USDA donations by 18—20% at a time when many face rising food insecurity.  KLCC
  • Lane County Youth Services will host its 16th Annual Community Holiday Meal on December 3 to offer free meals, raffle tickets and food boxes—students from Martin Luther King, Jr. Education Center will display their culinary skills as the event depends on donations for its food and prizes. Community members are invited to attend and support this local gathering.  KEZI
  • Today, the Eugene Mission is hosting a 24-hour event on World Homeless Day to address the causes of homelessness by bringing together local leaders like the Mayor of Springfield and the Chamber of Commerce—Executive Director Sheryl Balthrop said the dialogue will focus on the cycle of trauma, loss and grief that goes beyond simply providing homes.  NBC 16

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Oregon reduced staff support for its speech and debate program and will now provide only about $180,000 in student fee funding—half the previous amount—which led to the cancellation of the long-running debate tournament hosted by Clark Honors College.  KLCC
  • More than 400 fifth graders from Eugene and Springfield visited Clean Water University this week to learn about water science through tours, games and a field trip at a wastewater treatment plant — the event was supported by local wastewater, stormwater and drinking water agencies. The program, first held in 2020, is managed by Eugene, Springfield and the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission to show how water is cleaned and kept safe.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Oct. 9, the Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 7 reported that the Moon Complex Fire burned 19,549 acres and was 16% contained—wet weather and moist air helping firefighting efforts while crews repaired fire lines and completed brush chipping. Recreational users on the Rogue River between Foster Bar and Cougar Lane were told to stay cautious due to ongoing helicopter operations.  NBC 16
  • Residents worry that the rising McKenzie River will soon wash latrines, fuels, and personal items from homeless camps on an island near Rodakowski Boat Landing — local workers report that conditions have worsened over the past six months. Officials say it is unclear who manages the island as the Department of State Lands handles state waterways.  NBC 16

FINANCE NEWS

  • More than 2.1 million people have filed their 2024 state income tax returns and nearly 100,000 are expected to file before the extension deadline on October 15—filing late may result in additional penalties. The Oregon Department of Revenue advises taxpayers to file electronically to get refunds faster and to use the free filing options available online.  KVAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eugene City Council paused Flock license plate-reading cameras amid data privacy concerns, and Eyes Off Eugene supporters welcomed the move while calling for clearer timelines; Springfield City Council will discuss their own camera use on October 20.  KEZI

HEALTH NEWS

  • A football signed by Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is up for auction in Eugene as part of the Men Wear Pink campaign—this $400 collectible will support breast cancer research and services for the American Cancer Society.  KVAL

SPORTS NEWS

  • Freshman receiver Dakorien Moore has added nearly 300 yards to the Ducks record and continues to improve his play as coach Dan Lanning says his work on the field is making a big impact—boosting the team's offense. The Ducks will play Indiana on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on CBS at Autzen Stadium.  KVAL
