Good morning, Eugene. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 3rd of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new plaque honoring local jokebook salesman 'Frog' was unveiled on November 2 outside the Duck Store on 13th Avenue to remember his lively presence and impact on the community—over 60 donations helped fund its creation. The plaque, designed by local sculptor Alison Brown, includes a QR code that links to audio recordings of his groan-worthy jokes.  KLCC
  • Catholic Community Services of Lane County has seen a surge in food requests due to looming SNAP benefit cuts and a government shutdown—its nearly empty pantry shelves led it to urgently seek food and cash donations, including canned goods, proteins and shelf-stable items. The organization aims to raise $500,000 to support local families in need.  KEZI
  • On Sunday, Marcola Roadhouse collected boxes and hygiene items donated by local residents to help families in need—organizers Tessa Gutierrez and Chelsea Davis said the drive began after concerns grew that SNAP benefits might be cut amid an ongoing government shutdown.  KEZI

CULTURE NEWS

  • BlueJay’s Canoe – a play about loss, resilience, and Native stories – will open Nov. 7 at the Very Little Theater in Eugene. Kirby Brown, Marta Lu Clifford, and Theresa May spent two years developing the show to explore themes of grief and community during challenges like the pandemic and wildfires.  KLCC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service is set to publish a revised draft environmental impact statement next fall to update the Northwest Forest Plan that controls logging on 25 million acres along the Pacific Northwest. The update will refine forest type definitions & address commercial timber opportunities based on public and tribal input.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal workers missing paychecks from the ongoing government shutdown can apply for a Congressional Federal Credit Union loan that offers up to $10,000 with a 60-day zero-interest period and a 4% rate after that+ Congresswoman Val Hoyle said the program is open to both furloughed and active workers to help cover bills.  KEZI
  • Federal judges ordered the government to use emergency reserve funds for the SNAP program as the shutdown continues, but many SNAP recipients in Oregon and Washington could face delayed benefits since officials said the ruling leaves funding decisions to the administration — local agencies are preparing for gaps in support — while state leaders remain concerned about the hunger emergency.  KLCC
