COMMUNITY NEWS

  • First Baptist Church of Eugene will host a free Thanksgiving meal on November 27 from 12pm to 2pm. The event offers ham, side dishes + desserts and activities for kids to bring together community members from Eugene and Springfield.  KVAL
  • A Lane County food pantry struggled on Monday as delayed SNAP funds left residents like Allexcis Jones and her family of four relying on Catholic Community Services—where long lines reached the street. Officials worry that without the usual $600 monthly aid from SNAP, the pantry may not meet rising food demands this month.  KVAL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue rescued an injured hiker in the Three Sisters Wilderness on Halloween and provided emergency care for possible hypothermia before escorting the hiker to their vehicle.  KLCC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Eugene dropped 5.2 cents per gallon over the past week to an average of $3.57—a 43-cent decline from a month ago though still 12.5 cents above last year's rate. GasBuddy noted that the national average, which fell by 1.4 cents to $2.99, may soon rise if ongoing refinery problems continue.  NBC 16
  • Gasoline prices in Eugene fell by 5.2 cents in the past week to average $3.57—a drop of 43 cents compared to last month though prices remain 12.5 cents above last year. GasBuddy's analyst warned that the national average may rebound soon because of ongoing refinery issues and new production plans.  KVAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a Monday meeting, the Springfield School Board removed Jonathan Light (who faced three complaints) and Ken Kohl from their leadership roles amid allegations of authority abuse and policy violations. The board required both to complete extra training (a measure to refocus on student education) and officials said this change would improve oversight in the district.  KLCC
  • Superintendents from the three Eugene-Springfield school districts met at the City Club of Eugene on Halloween day to report on rising test scores, expanded career and technical programs, and ongoing funding challenges — they detailed the strategies and community partnerships used to support students. The event was broadcast live on KLCC 89.7 FM and streamed online, providing a clear update on the districts' efforts for the current school year.  KLCC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lane Transit District launched a mobile app partnership with Transit that unites trip planning for services like PeaceHealth Rides and Link Lane—making travel easier for riders across Lane County. The project, funded by a 2021 federal grant, offers real-time alerts and interactive features while LTD continues to support its current fare app, Umo.  KVAL

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • John Fischer reviewed his summer garden season in his Good Gardening column published yesterday. He explained that black cherry tomatoes turned mushy despite looking good—while beans grew well along a wheelchair ramp and yellow seed potatoes produced a poor crop, so he will adjust his planting methods next year.  KLCC
