COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fisherman's Market in Eugene is raffling a fresh Alaskan king crab dinner for four to six people—tickets cost $20 each and proceeds will help Burrito Brigade build its new Community Food Hub with entries submitted online ahead of the drawing on November 13.  KEZI
  • Burrito Brigade is a nonprofit that has served Eugene since 2014 by partnering with local businesses, grocery stores and farms to rescue food for 55 pantries amid SNAP delays and partial funding—residents like Fred Warren now face shortages with benefits that often leave them short by month’s end. The group continues to rely on community support to help keep its pantries stocked and feed people in need.  KVAL

  • On Oct. 1, longtime manager Maria Martin took over Eugene’s Metropol Bakery on Willamette St.—a shop known for its artisan bread and pastries for 48 years. Martin, who began working at the bakery in 1998, said she will maintain the high quality and add deli offerings to enhance the customer experience.  Eugene Weekly
  • T4 near the University of Oregon campus welcomes tired students with friendly service and tasty boba tea. The shop is open noon to 8 p.m. daily at 1341 Patterson Street—staff greet everyone like family.  Eugene Weekly

  • Recent incidents at fraternity events and campus housing have raised student safety concerns as University of Oregon officials investigate separate events on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 while students now check in with each other + exercise caution about substance tampering.  KEZI

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wildish Community Theater in Springfield is set to host 'Matilda Jr.' — a lively adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book and Tony Award-winning musical featuring songs by Tim Minchin. Evening shows are scheduled for November 7th, 8th, 14th, and 15th at 7:00 p.m. while matinees will run on November 8th, 9th, 15th, and 16th at 2:00 p.m.  KVAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by OSU and the U.S. Forest Service found that the 2021 heat dome burned over 1,000 square miles in western Oregon and Washington—turning healthy green canopies to red and orange in hours. The report warned that future hotter heat waves may cause similar damage to old-growth forests.  NBC 16

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP participants have gone five days without November benefits as the federal shutdown continues in Oregon—eligibility workers report a surge of clients needing help stretching food budgets. The Oregon Department of Human Services said there is no timeline for resuming benefits even though federal guidance directs 50% of benefits to be issued once funds arrive.  NBC 16
  • Lane County’s CleanLane trash and recycling facility project—set up by Bulk Handling Systems—will extend the life of the Short Mountain landfill by 20 years. The $150 million project faces a one-year delay as zoning issues and community complaints force the county to move the planned site from Goshen to Short Mountain.  NBC 16
