GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State economists said last week that stronger tax revenue closed most of the forecasted $373 million budget gap—leaving a shortfall of about $63 million before other costs. Lawmakers will review proposals for 2.5% to 5% budget cuts in next year's session as they face tough fiscal decisions. KLCC
- ➤ Lane Transit District announced Wednesday that it will suspend bus service on Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 27 — its administrative offices and customer service centers in Eugene and Springfield will be closed for the holiday. Bus service will resume on Nov. 28 with regular Friday schedules and customer service centers reopening normal hours while administrative offices remain closed. KVAL
- ➤ State funding cuts will cost Eugene nearly $4 million for shelters by reducing 60 beds and three programs—local warming centers also face a 50% drop in support that may cause three site closures despite receiving an anonymous donation. Officials say the funding shortfall will limit services for those relying on these essential programs. KVAL
- ➤ The City of Eugene will start a Vision Zero Intersection Study by installing temporary cameras at 10 intersections to capture 24-hour data—covering near misses, turning speeds, and pedestrian and cyclist movements. Officials will team with engineering firm DKS to analyze the data—guiding future roadway safety improvements. NBC 16
- ➤ Oregon State Parks finished upgrades at Beverly Beach and Silver Falls and set a new visitor center for Silver Falls in 2026, but postponed a welcome center and parking improvements at Smith Rocks due to budget issues — higher costs and reduced lottery funds forced a shift in spending.
